Next-Generation Mazda MX-5 Rumored To Debut in 2026

According to a recent rumor, the next-generation Mazda MX-5 will debut in 2026. This is excellent news for MX-5 fans who have been desperately waiting for information that the iconic coupe would receive some necessary attention. While Mazda has given the MX-5 Miata a new exterior color and modified the coupe for people with disabilities, fans have been clamoring for the next-generation MX-5. As one of the most versatile and engaging sports cars, the MX-5 has continued to represent the best aspects of Mazda. The Japanese automaker has been transitioning toward hybrid and electric vehicles, so many speculate that the new MX-5 could be a hybrid. Fortunately, the Japanese automaker has stated that it wants to transition to electric vehicles by 2030. To accomplish this, Mazda first plans to make use of hybrid powertrains. We have already seen this done with the all-new Mazda CX-60, which offers 322 horsepower and 369lb-ft of torque with an electric motor and a gas engine. Whether the new MX-5 will have a similar setup, we’re unsure. 

Mazda recently unveiled a render of an electric sports car called the Mazda Vision Study concept. The sports car provided a glimpse at what the future MX-5 may look like. Presented as a coupe, the concept embodies the qualities that make Mazda appealing. This included a sleek and unique design with a lightweight build. If Mazda were to build a hybrid or electric MX-5, it would likely have to utilize lightweight materials such as carbon fiber. This would ensure the sports car keeps its lightweight chassis and thereby remain highly engaging.

While carbon fiber materials would keep the MX-5 lightweight and agile, it would also increase the cost of the coupe. Mazda will need help finding the perfect balance between capability and affordability. Like many other automakers, Mazda wants to reduce its global carbon emissions. It also wants between 25 and 40 percent of its global sales to come from EVs. Although this may seem daring, Mazda plans to transition with hybrids first slowly and then fully electric vehicles. For now, we’ll have to wait for more information, but the next-generation MX-5 will likely be a hybrid sports car.
