The 2022 Mazda MX-30 Sells Out in California, What to Expect in 2023
As Mazda’s first electric vehicle, the 2022 Mazda MX-30 has already set the tone for the Japanese automaker’s future EV lineup. While the all-electric SUV embodies the qualities that make Mazda so versatile and unique, some have criticized the EV for its lackluster capability. This criticism surrounds the MX-30’s battery range which is currently only 100 miles. Thankfully, Mazda has created a solution for this low range, a plug-in hybrid system (PHEV). The automaker has already started implementing this PHEV system into vehicles like its all-new MX-60. Mazda is expected to implement a similar system into the 2023 MX-30 to increase its performance and range. We’ll go into further detail about this transition and see what consumers can expect from the all-electric SUV in 2023.
2023 Mazda MX-30 Expected to Feature PHEV System
The 2022 Mazda MX-30 recently sold out in California. Mazda initially released the all-electric SUV in specific areas like the Golden State to gauge consumer sentiment. As of July, the electric SUV had sold out. This is great news for the Japanese automaker as the MX-30 had come under fire for its underwhelming capability. Currently, the Mazda MX-30 arrives with a single electric motor that delivers 143 horsepower and 200lb-ft of torque. As far as its range goes, the EV SUV offers 100 miles. Despite the appeal of Mazda vehicles, this range was a cause of concern for many.
In order to increase the capability of the 2023 MX-30, Mazda has stated that the electric SUV will feature a plug-in hybrid system (PHEV). This system means that the MX-30 will come equipped with an electric motor in addition to a rotary engine. This combination will allow the battery to be powered by a 300-400cc rotary engine which will enhance its capability. This will provide additional range as well as a slight increase in performance.
While Mazda has not yet clarified the specifications of the MX-30 PHEV, it has stated its intention to include the PHEV system in some of its other vehicles. This includes the all-new MX-60 which boasts an impressive 322 horsepower and 369lb-ft of torque with its gas engine and electric motor. We’re hoping to hear more from the automaker regarding its PHEV plans, but it’s likely the 2023 Mazda MX-30 will definitely see more sales when offered with this setup. As for its California sales, a Mazda representative said,
“The introduction of 2022 MX-30 EV in California was successful, and the model sold out in July. Five hundred and five of the planned 560 units were sold for the 2022 model year. Mazda hasn’t yet shared any information on the 2023 model year MX-30. We will share further details regarding our electrification strategy soon.”
