Near the start of 2021, Mazda decided to remove two of the automatic transmissions for the Miata and replace them with a remodeled manual transmission. This was a celebrated decision by the Japanese automaker as it demonstrated their resolve in bringing back the original Miata. Of course, those consumers still wanting an automatic transmission Miata still have the option of the Grand Touring trim, but the base Miata has reclaimed its six-speed manual transmission.

Mazda has also upgraded the body rolls in the Miata. The Miata is known for its ability to corner, so it’s important that it does it well. To improve the Miata’s cornering ability, Mazda’s engineers improved the Miata’s steering and suspension geometry. They also improved the valving of its dampers and the thickness of the anti-roll bars. Called Kinematic Posture Control (KCP), this new mechanical solution applies a small amount of brake force to the inside rear wheel when cornering. This has granted the Miata even greater control by making the vehicle’s body flatter throughout the curve. This has allowed drivers to enjoy smoother handling and precision.

The MX-5 Miata Drives Like No Other

Going off the previous point, the Mazda MX-5 Miata drives and handles like no other vehicle. Equipped with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that’s capable of 181 horsepower and 151lb-ft of torque, the Miata proves to be smooth and highly capable with up to 7,500 rpm. The sports car comes paired with a six-speed manual transmission which has six forward ratios that are precise enough to ensure maintained momentum. This is ensured both while driving on the highway and when downshifting through corners. Since Mazda upgraded the Miata with better control and a new braking system, the Miata does well with its 181 horsepower. This is also due to the vehicle’s 2,400 pounds of curb weight. Light and nimble, the Miata drives and handles exceptionally well.

The third reason to consider the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata is its pricing. Starting at an MSRP of $28,315 (plus destination fee), the Miata Sport serves as an affordable sports car that offers a lot. The Miata also has two other trims, the Club and Grand Touring. Both the Sport and Club come with a six-speed manual transmission while those wanting a six-speed automatic can opt for the Grand Touring. The Club trim starts at an MSRP of $31,815 (plus destination fee) while the Grand Touring trim starts at an MSRP of $33,815 (plus destination fee). Overall, the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata is an affordable sports car that drives and handles exceptionally well.
