Mazda Miata Vs Toyota GR86, Which Wins Out?
The Mazda Miata has remained an iconic sports coupe given its impressive handling and engaging performance. While the most recent changes to the Miata have only been more accessibility and improved body roll, the sports coupe has continued to be a consumer favorite. Talk has risen about a next-generation Mazda Miata in the works, but until that is confirmed, we still have the highly engaging 2023 Miata to enjoy. A competitor to the Mazda classic is the Toyota GR86. Having just arrived in 2022 as a second-generation sports car, the GR86 poses a direct threat to the Miata with its cornering grip and sharp steering. Since both sports cars feature similar characteristics, we thought we’d take a look at the Mazda Miata and Toyota GR86 and see which proves to be the better sports coupe.
Mazda Miata
The Mazda Miata comes equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that delivers 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission that has precise forward ratios that ensure maintained momentum. The sports coupe provides drivers with a smooth and engaging driving experience thanks to its chassis and double-wishbone suspension. Mazda has also added a new braking system that uses Kinematic Posture Control aids. This unique system applies a small amount of brake force to the inside rear wheel which greatly increases the coupe’s cornering stability and control. Overall, the Miata provides an impressive balance of ride quality and handling when on the road. Steering is also engaging and the interior can be upgraded with the Recaro package for Recaro seats and forged BBS wheels/Brembo brakes.
Toyota GR86
The Toyota GR86 comes equipped with a 2.4-liter engine that delivers 228 horsepower. Owners can opt for either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. As a sports coupe, the GR86 is not as comfortable on the road as the Mazda Miata, but it does offer more mid-range torque and flexibility. The Toyota GR86 is stiffer and sharper on turns, and it even has a bit more acceleration. Despite this, the sports coupe does not feel as smooth and engaging as the Miata. Its gearbox is more rubbery and shifting is not as enjoyable as in the Miata. Still, the GR86 has a longer wheelbase so drivers will not feel the road as much. The GR86 also has a nicer standard interior cabin without the need for upgraded trims or packages. Â
Verdict
Overall, both the Mazda Miata and Toyota GR86 prove to be affordable and highly engaging sports cars. The Miata starts at an MSRP of $29,325 (plus destination fee) while the Toyota GR86 starts at an MSRP of $28,995 (plus destination fee). While both sports cars are affordable, the Miata has the edge with its responsive steering and engaging drive quality. It also comes with a convertible top. For those interested in hitting the track, the GR86 may prove to be the better choice since it has a bit more grip and gearing is less of an issue. For those wanting the everyday driver, the Miata proves to be the optimal choice. Additionally, while splurging on the Club Miata trim may prove worth it for some, it isn’t at all necessary to enjoy the Mazda Miata.Â

I will not by a car that can’t even hold a spare tire. I live in a state with hundreds of miles between stops and will not be stranded for hours because of a tire issue.
