Mazda will be readying a new factory for its upcoming EV strategy. Like many other automakers, Mazda has been hard at work on its own EVs. Having released its first all-electric SUV, the 2022 Mazda MX-30, the Japanese automaker hopes to continue its EV transition and have at least 25 percent of its global sales come from EVs by 2030. The 2022 MX-30 embodied many great qualities that attract consumers to Mazda. The compact SUV did receive criticism for its lackluster battery range, however. To combat this, Mazda went to work on a rotary engine that could serve as a hybrid setup for the MX-30 and future hybrid vehicles like the all-new CX-60 and upcoming CX-80. So far, this hybrid setup has appeared successful. With its new manufacturing plant, Mazda will be able to continue to produce hybrid vehicles that perform well and reduce carbon emissions. We’ll look at the automaker’s plans and see where Mazda will go.

Mazda to Open New Plant for EV Production

Mazda will begin work on a new manufacturing plant to fine-tune its EV strategy. The Japanese automaker plans to have at least 25 percent of its global sales come from electric vehicles by 2030. While this EV goal is not as intensive as seen with other automakers, it is a big push toward an electric future. In 2021, Mazda released its first all-electric SUV, the Mazda MX-30. The electric SUV proved nimble and quick with a single electric motor that delivers 143 horsepower and 200lb-ft of torque. The EV SUV saw power routed to its front wheels, and its equal weight distribution gave it precise steering and responsiveness.

One problem with the 2022 Mazda MX-30 was its low-end battery range. Offering 100 miles of range, the MX-30 proved to be underwhelming for those in need of a long traveler. While Mazda ensured the SUV had impressive handling and excellent braking response, the electric SUV fared better in close-knit cities. Thankfully, Mazda sought a rotary engine setup to equip future MX-30s with a plug-in hybrid system. The SUV can see increased battery range by attaching a rotary engine to the electric motor. Future hybrids will also see an increase in power when using a similar combustion engine and electric motor combination.

According to the online publication Auto News Canada, Mazda will attempt to prioritize revenue per vehicle and profitability over volume in the upcoming years. The Japanese automaker will aim for close to 1.8 million units sold by 2026. With its EV goal of 25 percent, the automaker would see about 450,000 EVs on the road by 2030. As it perfects its EV technology, it seems that Mazda will continue to focus on its rotary engine technology. Combining combustion engines with electric motors allows Mazda to offer high-performance vehicles that do not sacrifice range or capability. For now, we’ll be staying tuned for anything else the Japanese automaker has in store.
