A Look at Mazda’s SkyActiv Technology

Mazda’s SkyActiv technology has been the driving force behind the Japanese automaker’s continued success. Launched in 2013, the SkyActiv philosophy is one that focuses on sustainable engineering. As part of its carbon reduction goals, the automaker hopes to have all of its vehicles have some form of electrification by 2030. How Does Mazda’s SkyActiv Technology Work?

Mazda first made the switch to its SkyActiv technology in 2013 with the Mazda CX-5. Since then Mazda has improved and modified its technology to offer better performance. This performance has enhanced the overall quality of Mazda vehicles and created some of the most engaging vehicles around. The SkyActiv technology is not only the engine, but also the designs, equipment, and features all working together. As a part of Mazda’s sustainable engineering philosophy, SkyActiv technology provides control of the engine, transmission, chassis, and body to enhance the feeling of connection between the driver and their vehicle. 

In order to provide drivers with impeccable handling and an engaging experience, Mazda makes use of its SkyActiv technology. Mazda’s SkyActiv technology utilizes various vehicle dynamics like G-Vectoring Control to enhance chassis performance. The SkyActiv engine also utilizes a fuel injector similar to most gasoline engines. This injector sprays gas directly into the combustion chamber and then bypasses the intake valves. This system allows fuel to be sent to the optimal location for combustion which helps provide a cooling effect that creates higher compression ratios. These ratios then add increased efficiency and cleaner combustion. 

Where Will Mazda Take its SkyActiv Technology?

Mazda has been working meticulously to improve its technology and equipment. Mazda engineers have designed the SkyActiv powertrain to meet crash testing criteria. They have also modified it to be lighter and more rigid to improve handling. In seeking out ways to improve its technology, Mazda has created SkyActiv-X which is a unique combustion engine technology that uses a very high compression design. This technology improves upon SkyActiv by reducing emissions and improving torque. 

In aiming toward electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, Mazda has created another layer in its SkyActiv technology called Spark Controlled Compression Ignition. This technology utilizes a high compression ratio of 15:1 and ignition technologies to achieve better fuel economy and increase driving performance. Mazda has experimented with the new technology in its latest CX-60 which offers a plug-in hybrid system. In aiming for its environmental goals, Mazda will continue to offer hybrids and EVs. While Mazda hybrid models are not yet fully accessible in the U.S, Mazda Canada’s National Manager of Technical Services Daniel Grenier has stated,

“Mild-hybrid versions of the Skyactiv engines are now available in some other markets, and will be introduced in North America as more of Mazda’s models receive electrification,” said Grenier.
