The time has come for Mazda’s all-new six-cylinder diesel engine. The Japanese automaker initially teased the all-new diesel engine as a new introduction for the 2022 Mazda CX-60 and now it is finally here. As of late, Mazda has been aiming to improve its lineup by elevating its vehicles into a higher luxury class. This new engine along with a new Rhodium White paint option will allow Mazda to distinguish itself from its competitors. The Mazda CX-60 is slated to be Mazda’s most powerful SUV yet, but the automaker will also be releasing two new SUVs in the coming years, the CX-70 and CX-90. For now, we’ll discuss this new engine and see what consumers can expect.

Mazda Releases New 3.3L Diesel Engine

After teasing the 2022 Mazda CX-60 and its powerful capabilities, Mazda has finally announced that the crossover SUV will feature a new 3.3L six-cylinder diesel engine. The Mazda CX-60 will come equipped with either a standard or hybrid system and it will make use of either the 3.3L six-cylinder diesel engine or a 2.5L four-cylinder engine. The 3.3L will feature two outputs: 197 horsepower and 242 horsepower. The 2.5L will be capable of 189 horsepower. Mazda is also making both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive available for the diesel engine. The 2.5L will only utilize rear-wheel drive.

The 2022 Mazda CX-60 will be one of the first vehicles to make use of Mazda’s new Skyactiv Multi Solution Scalable Architecture. While Mazda initially said the crossover SUV would only come with rear-wheel drive, the new diesel engine opens the option for all-wheel drive. The 3.3L diesel engine will provide drivers with high performance as well as great towing capacity. With up to 5,500 pounds of towing capacity, the CX-60 paired with the 3.3L engine will offer drivers the ability to go 0-60 mph in just 7.4 seconds.

Alongside the new diesel engine, the Mazda CX-60 will also offer a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option. This PHEV setup will combine a combustion engine with an electric motor. This combination will provide the crossover SUV with more output, a total of 322 horsepower with the 2.5L engine, and it will also allow drivers to utilize a 17.8 kWh battery. Mazda has stated that the PHEV CX-60 will eventually get the option of a diesel engine but for now, those interested in the new crossover SUV have a lot of options available. The 2022 Mazda CX-60 is currently open for reservation but the diesel engine option will become available in the first quarter of 2023.
