After teasing the release of a brand new engine, Mazda is finally making good on its promise. The Japanese automaker recently announced its all-new inline-six 3.3L diesel engine. This new engine will come equipped inside the all-new CX-60. The new crossover SUV will feature a rear-wheel drive, something Mazda has been hinting at for some time. Mazda has promised to deliver three new SUVs in the new decade and we’ve already seen two of them, the all-new CX-50 and the CX-60 which will also feature a plug-in hybrid system (PHEV). We’re not sure what the third SUV will be, but it may also feature a PHEV system along with the option for this new diesel engine. Either way, we’ll check out the new 3.3L diesel engine and see what can be expected.

Mazda to Offer New 3.3L Diesel Engine

Mazda will be offering an all-new inline-six 3.3L diesel engine. The engine will be paired with either a standard system or a hybrid system. This will serve the automaker’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models that it plans to offer. One of these is the MX-30 which is an all-electric crossover SUV. While the electric crossover has been relatively well-received, the addition of this PHEV system will grant the MX-30 much more battery range than its base of 100 miles.

Mazda’s new inline-six diesel 3.3L engine will be capable of 228 horsepower and 369lb-ft of torque. There will also be a hybrid setup that will be capable of 251 horsepower and 406lb-ft of torque. The diesel engine will come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission which will send power to both axles in the new CX-60 crossover SUV. It will be capable of going 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds. If owners opt for the PHEV version of the CX-60, they will enjoy a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds.

Those interested in the PHEV CX-60 will see an electric motor with a 17.8kWh battery pack. This will grant drivers 39 miles of electric range. The only stipulation is that they will have to opt for an all-wheel-drive system rather than the new rear-wheel-drive system. Either choice will hold up performance-wise. It’s good to see Mazda expanding its horizons with new variants. Hopefully, we will continue to see these choices with future models. For now, we’ll be waiting patiently.
