There’s a Rotary Engine Inside Your Mazda MX-30

It’s official; the Mazda MX-30 will feature a traditional engine with a twist. The future hybrid’s powertrain will include some zest from the rotary engine. To clarify, the iconic rotary engine won’t be the only thing powering the SUV. Instead, the engine will come to complete the plug-in hybrid’s powertrain. The rotary-equipped MX-30 will strut its stuff at the Brussels Motor Show (Brussels, Belgium, from January 14-22, 2023). 

There isn’t much to divulge except “compact crossover will feature an electric generator powered by a newly-developed rotary engine,” said Mazda. The Japanese automaker’s new plug-in hybrid will eliminate the traditional ICE engine to make room for the rotary. 

While Mazda enthusiasts are used to the rotary engine propelling sports cars to their fullest potential, the engine will act as a generator or a power source for electric vehicles. Nonetheless, we’re hopeful that Mazda has more plans for the legendary engine. 

Mazda and its EV Goals 

The Japanese automaker has never been afraid to stand out as a powerful lone wolf in an automotive market full of sheep. The ‘Zoom-Zoom’ automaker proceeds with a tortoise-like approach to the sustainability race. The Miata maker’s concern isn’t with electric vehicles; evolution is inevitable. Yet, the dilemma is EV’s increasing popularity in a short period of time, especially within the North American market. Mazda foresees that by 2030, 25% of its sales will stem from its electric cars. After that, however, the Japanese automaker’s expectations are expected to skyrocket. At the time of writing, Mazda intends to sell 450,000 electric vehicles by 2030 with the assistance of the automaker’s new electric platform destined for 2025. After all, slow and steady is what wins the race.
