Next Mazda MX-5 Miata to Receive Hybrid Powertrain

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a legendary heartthrob. As one of the most affordable sports cars on the market, the automaker imagines what’s next for the iconic Roadster. Clean those glasses, and enthusiasts will find a new generation of the Mazda sports car on the horizon. However, clean those nostrils, and there might not be too many gas fumes in those nostrils. The Roadster may inherit a hybrid powertrain for its fourth generation. After all, the Euro 7 emissions regulations leave the Japanese automaker with a lot to consider.

“It should be also heavily triggered by the implementation of the new legislation that was recently announced for stage seven in Europe. So the contents of stage seven we are still investigating, but it will affect our MX-5 at the time. It will, at the time, be some kind of electrification so we need to investigate the most appropriate strategy for the future MX-5 which will not betray our passionate fans’ expectations.”

– Yasuhiro Aoyama, Mazda’s Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer

Mazda’s Senior Managing Executive Officer, Aoyama sentiments echo the automaker’s electrification plans. Back in 2021, a spokesperson for the Japanese automaker expressed plans for a sustainable next-gen Miata.

Mazda’s Head of Design, Akia Tamatani, spoke of the Miata’s future. Tamatani emphasized the future Roadster will not employ the automaker’s new mild-hybrid inline-six. Tamatani also stated that the hybrid inline-six would detract from the MX-5. Further, the Mazda sports car will not resemble the Vision Study Concept.

“It’s a message. We have this passion to create that type of vehicle, that’s the message we want to say. But will we make production vehicles made from that? We still haven’t really decided.”

 – Akira Tamatani, Mazda Head of Design

September 2022 revealed some spy photos of the current iteration of the Miata with a disguised front bumper. Look close enough, and the rear fenders appear more expansive than the 2022 Mazda Miata. The vehicle allegedly served as a prototype for the next-gen Miata, so anticipate more details in 2023.
