Mazda’s Rotary Engine is Back!
Jackson 5’s “Never Can Say Goodbye” played in the background as Mazda enthusiasts waved a gut-wrenching farewell to the RX-8. The era of the rotary engine came to a close for all car makers. Yet, when the Japanese automaker released the 2015 RX-Vision concept, it was a subtle nod to the resurrection of the RX series and the rotary piston engine. However, since the concept’s debut, Mazda’s been tight-lipped about the future of the unique engine. Fortunately, more details on the rotary may come to light sooner than later.
The Rotary Engine as a Generator for EVs?
With 2030 rapidly approaching, the Japanese automaker set a target goal that may require some assistance from the rotary piston engine. So starting mid-November (2022), the revived engine will debut during the current fiscal year, which ends in March of 2023.
Although Mazda vehicles will come equipped with the new engine, they will not power the car’s wheels directly. Instead, the rotary engine will act as a generator, charging the electric vehicle’s battery. Once the batteries are charged, they will supply energy to the electric motor.
The Japanese automaker is no stranger to thinking outside the box compared to contenders who cower to the same ideas as sheep. However, Mazda is fearless in standing alone, exploring what has yet to be done, and employing the rotary engine as a generator for its EVs. Although the idea’s never been explored, there’s still a great chance that the concept will eliminate the engine’s most significant disadvantage.
So electric vehicles are primarily vibration free, and the engine concept will also render a low-vibration operation. Additionally, the famed gulping of the rotary piston when it pierces at high speeds will become unnecessary when the engines are employed as generators at low velocities. Although this isn’t how enthusiasts would like to see the return of the rotary piston, let’s be thankful that it’s back.
Mazda’s 2030 Goal
Again Mazda’s not afraid to stand as a lone wolf as the automaker raises an eyebrow at the increased demand for EVs. The concern isn’t necessarily for electric vehicles but their increasing popularity in a brief time, especially in the North American market. The Japanese automaker anticipates by 2030, 25 percent of its sales will come from its battery-electric vehicles. After that, however, the automaker’s expectations are expected to increase. At the time of writing, Mazda plans to sell 450,000 EVs by 2030 through the automaker’s new electric platform slated for 2025.
