The rumors can finally be laid to rest as Mazda reveals where and why the rotary engine has reemerged from the automaker’s archive. The MX-30 R-EV inherited the Wankel engine. Why? Well, to act as a range extender. To witness the revived rotary engine, enthusiasts can make their way to the Brussels Motor Show (January 13, 2023).

The R-EV is not to be confused with its older sibling, the resurrected Mazda RX-7. In addition, the rotary engine will operate at a constant speed since it is intended to function as a range extender for recharging the vehicle’s battery. The Japanese automaker expressed that the newfound solution resembles an electric drivetrain’s benefits but provides the range of a combustion powerplant.

The current Mazda MX-30 employs a single electric motor that yields 144 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. The all-electric SUV propels from 0 to 60 mph in under ten seconds.

Although the MX-30 with the rotary range extender isn’t available yet, Mazda hasn’t clarified whether or not it would increase the electric motor’s output since the SUV gains some weight with the added engine.

It was only two years ago (2020) Mazda stated that the MX-30 would consider a rotary range extender. The automaker went on to officiate its rotary plans later that year. Since 2021, the Japanese automaker knew it would offer the range extended variation of the SUV to the American market.

Mazda and Wankel have maintained a close alliance for quite some time. In fact, in 1964, the Cosmo premiered at the Toyko Motor Show as the first rotary-propelled Mazda. However, production for the sports car didn’t commence until 1967. Various models, such as the RX-3 and RX-7, allowed fans to experience the rotary engines’ unparalleled performance.

The RX-8 was the last vehicle to feature the Wankel engine, but Mazda recognized its tenacity and knew it would revive the rotary sooner than later. So it’s refreshing to know that through all the patents and rumors, the Wankel engine is finally back.
