The 2022 Mazda MX-30 Rotary Range Extender is Real!

Mazda had initially paused the release of the rotary range extender in July 2020. However, the 2022 MX-30 Plug-In Hybrid EV (PHEV) will roam the throne like never before. Mazda refers to the PHEV as a series plug-in hybrid, which means the gasoline-fired rotary engine is not linked directly to wheels. Instead, the powertrain provides juice to feed the electric battery and motors.     

Confirmation of the range extender is the only thing Mazda has provided, as many are unsure of the aesthetic differential between the PHEV and EV variations. The Japanese automakers have yet to reveal any crucial details on how the engine will impact the MX-30’s weight, gas tank capacity, or, most importantly, what extra range the range extender provides.    

The element of surprise dissipates because the range extender is likely to duplicate Mazda’s testing in Japan of the home-market Demio (Mazda 2) from a few years ago. Moreover, devotees in the States haven’t been privy to a rotary engine since the discontinuation of the RX-8 in 2012.
