The Mazda CX-80 Will Premiere in Europe by Late 2023
Since the Mazda CX-60 launched in Europe in 2022, the CX-90 debuted in the US shortly after. However, the Japanese automaker has plans to extend its rear-wheel drive offerings for 2023. The Mazda CX-70 will premiere in the next few months (2023) as a two-row spin-off of North America’s CX-90. Further, Martijn Brink, the CEO of Mazda Europe, announced that the CX-80 would go on sale later this year.Â
Although Brink maintained a tight lip about the two-row SUV, it knows that CX-80 will act as a more extensive, three-row variation of the CX-60. Therefore, the Mazda CX-80 will closely resemble the European market CX-90, yet with a slimmer frame. But unfortunately, the Japanese automaker will only sell the future SUV in Europe because the automaker plans to debut the vehicle in the Japanese market and other markets.Â
The forthcoming seventh seater will extend beyond the CX-60’s 186.6 inches in length. In addition, to accommodate the third row, the wheelbase will stretch further than 113 inches. Although the Mazda CX-60 will cruise along on the automaker’s new rear-wheel drive platform with inline-six gas and diesel engine, the midsize SUV will also accommodate a plug-in hybrid powertrain.Â
Some more news for the European market, Brink confirmed that the Mazda 3 is on the other side of history, facing discontinuation. As a result, the subcompact crossover is no longer open for reservations, but a few units are still available. Nonetheless, the CX-5 is considered Europe’s best-selling model in 2023, with some assistance from a new mild-hybrid variation.Â
The European Mazda CEO did not confirm nor deny the possibility of installing the range-extended rotary engine in several other models besides the MX-30. Further, Brink stated that the Mazda 3 and CX-30 employ the same platform, so the rotary engine may come to life beyond the automaker’s current EV. Before the decade ends, Mazda believes that 40 to 70 percent of annual sales will stem from its electric models. Â
