The Mazda CX-60 to Receive Inline-Six Engine

The 2022 Mazda CX-60 premiered in March of 2022, and the plug-in hybrid system propels through a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter gas engine. In addition to the naturally aspirated engine, the SUV also harbors an electric motor for a dynamic output of 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. However, the diesel engine proves as refreshing as the hybrid engine with the 3.3-liter straight-six inline engine forging 251 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque. However, no other market is more fortunate than the Australian inheriting the gasoline-propelled 3.3-liter straight-six inline configuration and the 48V mild-hybrid system. 

Many contenders would argue that the CX-60’s output numbers don’t appeal as compelling. However, the newly developed gas engine delivers 280 horsepower between 5,000 and 6,00 rpm. Moreover, the 331 lb-ft of torque arrives from 2,000 rpm through 3,500 rpm. Of course, these numbers fail when compared to AMG-kitted C63, but let’s consider why the Japanese automaker forges adequate power and not an excess. 

One reason Mazda’s six-cylinder engine produces less than 300 horsepower is emission restrictions. Another reason is that the legendary automaker intentionally detuned the 3.3-liter engine for fuel efficiency and reliability, for a performance that Mazda enthusiasts can trust. A Mazda Australian spokesperson sat down with CarExpert to reveal that the CX-60’s wider-bodied cousins, the CX-70 and three-row seater CX-90, which are both exclusive to the US, will inherit the modified engine with different specifications.       

Therefore the American market may experience more power than Mazda Australia. However, what does remain uncertain is the type of fuel necessary for an efficient output, similar to the Mazda3 Turbo. However, the decision to premiere the six-cylinder is a surprise since other car makers are leaning more towards downsizing due to emission regulations.
