Mazda Hints that the New Inline-Six will be the Last

It’s as if Mazda was the barber who cut against the grain, and it turns out amazing. The Japanese automaker will introduce an array of large combustion engines that premieres an inline-six layout. The combustible engine can be had as a gasoline or diesel engine. However, Mazda’s polished combustion engines are a step in the other direction for most automakers. It’s almost as if the Japanese automakers look to run a marathon instead of leading in the rat race. The 3.0-liter gas and 3.3-liter diesel units will serve as Mazda’s last internal combustion engine.

“This will be most likely be the last generation of internal combustion engines, so we will prepare for the toughest expected target and then adjust using after-treatment solutions.”

-Joachim Kunz, Senior Member of Technical Development at Mazda R&D Center in Europe

Mazda expresses confidence that the diesel will achieve Euro 7 regulations, although nothing’s set in stone. The European Commission will hammer out the strict standard by July (2022); however, Euro 7 won’t take effect until later this decade.

Dozens of other automakers express concerns about the new standard of ICE (internal combustible engine) powered vehicles. Most importantly, automakers are nervous about the pricing. In addition to concerns about pricing, automakers have to consider the cost of offsetting the increase in engineering costs necessary to sustain a cleaner engine. Mazda, however, holds faith that there’s a special place in the automotive market for a six-cylinder. So one reason for the ‘Zoom-Zoom’ automaker’s larger-than-life 3.3-liter displacement for the diesel was to provide the engineers with more than enough wiggle room.

“Having a 3.3-liter engine means we want to be on the safe side for torque and power.”

-Kunz

There are very few details on how robust the 3.0-liter gas engine will be; however, there are a few juicy details about the diesel’s output numbers. The standard ICE SKYACTIV-D yields 228 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. Additionally, the e-SKYACTIV-D features mild-hybrid tech that renders a powerful output of 251 horsepower and a juicy 406 lb-ft of torque. Lastly, Kunz expressed confidence in the 3.3-liter diesel’s affordability with price comparisons to the equally efficient four-pot.
