The 2023 Mazda CX-9 Vs. the 2024 Mazda CX-90

Sadly the Mazda CX-90 does not offer the automaker’s signature hue. For example, the headlights appear a tad boxier, the taillights stretch a bit longer, and the nose is nice and low, making it easier to conquer the road. 

Interior 

The CX-9 was the perfect tone setter for the automaker’s premium cabins. Even as the SUV approaches discontinuation, the vehicle renders quality materials. The two-tone setup is simple yet sleek, and the ‘Zoom-Zoom’ automaker found a way for black and brown to pair exquisitely. The dashboard is smooth and transforms into a thick center console seamlessly. Furthermore, the main controls are ingeniously grouped and safely within reach of the driver.  Although both SUVs deliver spacious and comfy front seats, the older three-row SUV is heavily bolstered. Therefore, the CX-9 is highly recommended for enthusiasts that appreciate a sportier experience. 

The Japanese automaker is no stranger to thinking outside the box, and with the CX-90, the design team delivers a bright and airy cabin. Distinctive fabric coats the dashboard and door cards. In addition, there are hints of wood and reflective chrome dotting the door panels. One of our favorite features is the hanging stitch that stretches across the dashboard face. The hanging stitch act as an homage to ancient Japanese bookbinding techniques. 

Both Mazda’s retain a turbocharged engine yet cater to enthusiasts differently. First, the CX-9 employs the emphatic 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbo forging 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque (but that’s with premium octane). The mature Mazda offers a mildly spicy passing potency. The SUV presents exemplary ride quality and a nice trip upstream to the flow of a firmness. Additionally, the CX-9 is quick to respond thanks to well-weighted precision from the steering wheel. Further, the older Mazda’s light weight makes for a thrilling time on back roads.

Then there’s the Mazda CX-90 employing the new 3.3 inline six, delivering a hearty 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. A unique experience for Mazda SUV, the CX-90 offers a slick satin transit. Relax and enjoy smooth riding guided by an eight-speed automatic. In addition, the new SUV receives some assistance from the mild hybrid system. Low speeds propel to a heartbeat’s rhythm, and the start-stop is a smooth transition. 

Treading in the tire marks of the Mazda CX-9, the CX-90 offers more solidity than the typical three-row. Potholes and speed bumps don’t stand a chance, and the newest Mazda remains cool, calm, and collected. Moreover, the CX-90 stays faithful to the automaker’s beliefs of being solid as a rock but light as a feather. 

The Verdict: 

Any time the Japanese automaker unveils a double-digit SUV, we must ask ourselves whether the single-digit variation still holds relevance. Although a tough decision, the Mazda CX-3 is no longer, but there’s a considerable difference between the CX-5 and CX-50. The same scenario applies to the CX-9 and CX-90. The single-digit SUV caters to a more mainstream appeal. At the same time, the CX-90 is a flawless attempt at scaring a handful of German automakers. The forthcoming Mazda is a smooth and luxurious calling to those who dare to stand tall. For now, the legendary automaker has room to accommodate everyone.
