Mazda Vehicles Have a Heartbeat?
Modern-day vehicles encounter more challenges than their predecessors, trying to deliver fresh or innovative ideas that have never been attempted before. It’s challenging to consider how much intricacy goes into every single detail. However, Mazda prides itself on obsessing over minor details, and with that said, the automaker has taken the modern automobile game to another level. The Japanese automaker recently revealed the design behind a new turn signal. The Mazda turn signal mimics the rhythm of a beating heart. Nonetheless, the LED lights task was only successfully fulfilled with trials and tribulations.Â
The soothing rhythm of the beating turn signal premiered on the Mazda CX-30. In addition, Mazda’s lamp development leader, Atsushi Yoshida, was the Einstein behind the LED lights cultivation. Yoshida stated that although the LED lamps offer many advantages for turn signals, the lights turn on and off, which delivers a feel that’s cold and robotic.Â
The heart-beating LED lights proved challenging for Yoshida, especially since the Japanese automaker places significant importance on “human-centric designs.” So the Mazda designer primarily focused on the vehicle’s perspective from enthusiasts and nay-sayers alike. Ultimately, Yoshida believed the best way to cultivate a distinctive signal was to render a human experience, and it doesn’t get more human than a heartbeat.Â
“A turn signal lamp must effectively communicate a driver’s intention and catch the attention of pedestrians and other drivers. I hoped that the feeling of a human heart – echoed in how the turn signal lamp instantly appears and then gradually dims – could reduce driver tension and create feelings of calmness and safety for the viewer.”

To successfully create the LED headlights rhythm, Yoshida studied electrocardiograms and watched the waveforms produced by the heartbeat. In addition, the skillful lamp developer studied various waveforms and examined how long heartbeats lingered and faded. While the process alludes as straightforward, Yoshida revealed it took him and his team two years to create the signal, initially missing its first deadline.Â
“A big setback came when its first scheduled installation into the Mazda3 was canceled because the light dimmed inconsistently. However, working with Mazda engineers and our supplier, Stanley Electric Co., Ltd., we repeatedly readjusted the signal light in 0.01-second increments, solved the problem, and installed it successfully.”

The “Dimming Turn Signals” will prove to other enthusiasts on the road that impossible to deny Mazda’s ingenious attention to detail.Â
