Special Edition Mazda MX-5 Miata in the Works
According to a recent interview, Shigeki Saito, the Mazda Miata’s Program Manager, has revealed that the fourth-generation model of the ND3 MX-5 is here to stay for a while. Mazda recently introduced the ND3 MX-5 in Japan, indicating that the current generation of the sports car is sticking around for a couple of years, if not longer. Saito further stated that Mazda wants to keep the ND as long as possible and satisfy compliance with regulations.
Saito, the Mazda Miata’s Program Manager, explained that the company is in no rush to replace the current model and has yet to set a specific time frame for a new launch. The reason is that electrifying the roadster would make it too heavy to live up to the Miata’s lightweight ethos. Mazda is ideally waiting for batteries to get smaller and lighter before launching an electric MX-5.
The current MX-5 will still receive updates despite the lack of a next-generation model soon. According to Saito, plans are already underway for “something very cool,” including special editions. Although he didn’t provide any specifics, there may be a 35th-anniversary model in the works for 2024, as the NA model went on sale in 1989. Furthermore, in 2014, a special edition debuted to mark the 25th anniversary.
Understandably, fans of the Mazda MX-5 are hoping for some exciting color options for the upcoming special editions. The ND3 MX-5 only introduced the Aero Gray Metallic paint, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea. The Racing Orange hue of the 30th Anniversary model was a hit among enthusiasts, but it’s time for something fresh and innovative. While the Soul Red Crystal color is still popular, it has been around for quite some time, and some fans are hopeful for something new and unique to make their MX-5 stand out from the crowd.
The ND generation of the Mazda MX-5 may become the longest-running generation, as it was unveiled in 2014 and still roars strong. The Japanese automaker may release a special edition celebrating a decade of the ND in 2024, although the current Miata technically entered production in early 2015. An anniversary model may be in the works, arriving in 2025, provided it’s one of those “very cool” special editions that Shigeki Saito mentioned. Fans of the MX-5 will have to wait and see what Mazda has in store for them.
“We’d like to do whatever we can, utilizing the ND, because we think that the ND has a very high potential, therefore we’d like to do everything – whatever we can do.”
-Shiheki Saito, Mazda Miata Program ManagerÂ
