2023 Mazda CX-50 Reunites with American Manufacturing
Last Wednesday (January 26, 2022) was a monumental day for Mazda. The Japanese automaker revealed that the 2023 Mazda CX-50 would go into production. Production will begin at the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama.Â
The first CX-50 came off the assembly at the hands of Mazda North American Operations President and CEO Jeff Guyton.Â
“Production of the CX-50 here signifies the importance of the North American market to Mazda and our commitment to investing in the US.”
– Mazda North American Operations President and CEO, Jeff Guyton.Â
The circle of life performs another 360. It wouldn’t be the first time the Zoom-Zoom automaker constructed trailblazing vehicles on American Soil. Mazda and Ford collaborated on Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant (initially Mazda Motor Manufacturing USA) in 1991. Mazda terminated production at the assembly plant, and the last Mazda 6 built in the US was in 2012. The termination led to Mazda turning to imports from its Hoku factory in Japan and Mazda de Mexico Vehicle Operation in Salamanca, Mexico.Â
Ten years later, Mazda is back and embodies the epitome of better than ever, thanks to the new Mazda CX-50. The “rugged and capable” crossover is tailor-made specifically for Americans. The new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing facility can assemble up to 300,000 vehicles a year. Yet, even with the large production capacity, the assembly will split production between the CX-50 and the Toyota Corolla Cross.Â
Mazda maintains a tight lip about the rugged crossover for now. However, confirmation assures choosing which Mazda CX-50 to own will be a difficult decision to make. There are many options to choose from, such as the naturally aspirated or the turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. There’s also confirmation of an electrified powertrain and a “traditional hybrid model.”Â
The 2023 CX-50 Mazda will find its way to dealerships sometime in Spring (2022). The Mazda SUV will also feature the i-Activ all-wheel-drive system as a standard. Plus, the addition of selectable drive modes heightens the experience of off-road and sport driving.Â
