The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Receives Toyota-Based Powertrain
The culmination of Mazda and Toyota’s collaboration presents the upcoming hybrid powertrain for the 2023 Mazda CX-50. The vehicle’s dynamic engineer of the CX-50 crossover, Dave Coleman, confirmed that the SUV’s gas-electric drivetrain comes from Toyota. Unfortunately, Mazda hasn’t shared any other details about the CX-50 hybrid just yet. But this is Mazda’s first hybrid variation since the Mazda Tribute.
The history between the CX-50 and Toyota already runs deep. From frame to the concept, the CX-50 came to life in the new Alabama factory shared between Toyota and Mazda automakers. But Coleman mentioned that the nonhybrid variation of the SUV utilizes a Mazda platform and Skyactiv gasoline engines. Coleman also revealed the nonhybrid CX-50 doesn’t share the same parts as the Toyota Corolla Cross. The Corolla Cross assembly also comes from the Alabama factory.
The Mazda CX-50 and the Toyota Corolla Cross are built on separate lines. The two vehicles also fit two different size segments. The CX-50 is a compact entry vehicle, whereas the Corolla Cross competes in the subcompact SUV segment.
Speculation circulated that the 2023 CX-50 hybrid will take advantage of the Toyota RAV4s Hybrid. The RAV4 Hybrid holds a 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine and two electric motor generators. Ears to the wind have also picked up the idea of the Corolla Cross Hybrid. The only disadvantage to this speculation is that the Corolla Cross is smaller, so its powertrain won’t be powerful enough for the mammoth CX-50.
More news about the CX-50 hybrid will unravel in the coming months. More than likely, information surrounding the 2023 CX-50 hybrid will trickle down after the nonhybrid hits dealerships in the spring of 2022.

Hello,
I hope Mazda is going to keep the 2.5l cx 50 engine with cylinder deactivation technology mated to an automatic transmission instead or the non premium eCVT offered by Toyota Hybrids ( RAV4 hybrid,Corrola hybrid Lexus RX and NX plug inhybrid ). That would make a difference on the market otherwise what a point to buy a rebadged Toyota with nothing extra to justify buying a Mazda known for legendary sport mid premium oriented cars/SUV. I already put my name on the upcoming cx50 hybrid. Hope not to be deceive by its powertrain when it will be officially released. thanks 😊
