Mazda will be upgrading the 2023 Mazda 3 to feature more robust performance. The Japanese automaker will adjust the Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback to provide consumers with a more efficient engine. This engine will feature a new cylinder deactivation system which will help provide more horsepower and efficiency. As of late, Mazda has been steadily improving its lineup. The automaker has been aiming to incorporate its rotary engine into plug-in hybrids and EVs like its MX-30. The hope is that this addition will further improve its lineup by offering more powerful capability. The CX-60 is one example of this combination. While a new diesel engine is coming for the Mazda 3, we’ll look at the current model and see what adjustments Mazda will be making.

2023 Mazda 3 Receives Powerboost

The 2023 Mazda 3 will be receiving an engine upgrade. The sedan/hatchback initially came standard with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine, but Mazda is removing it in favor of a 2.5L four-cylinder. The naturally aspirated 2.5L will now come standard and offer drivers 191 horsepower. While this is just a 5-horsepower increase from the 2022 Mazda 3, this is still a significant improvement for both the 2023 Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback. Owners seeking more power will also have the option to opt for a turbocharged 2.5L engine that offers 250 horsepower.

In addition to the extra horsepower, Mazda has implemented a new engine cylinder-deactivation system. This system makes the 2.5L engine more efficient and improves the Mazda 3’s fuel economy. The new system grants owners an increase of 1 mpg in the city and on the highway. This increase will be seen across all 2023 Mazda 3 trims and the turbocharged engine.

The updated 2023 Mazda 3 will arrive in the fall of 2022. The hatchback will be available first, while the sedan will follow later in the winter. Those interested in the Mazda 3 will have the option of front-wheel drive, which comes standard, or all-wheel drive. If consumers opt for a front-wheel drive, they can select a six-speed manual transmission. Otherwise, should they choose all-wheel drive, they will have to select a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2023 Mazda 3 starts at an MSRP of $23,550 (plus destination fee).
