The demand for diesel vehicles has steadily declined in recent years, especially following the “Dieselgate scandal.” While these vehicles were never prevalent in North America, they were a massive success in Europe. However, things have changed, and last month, electric vehicles surpassed diesel models in sales for the first time in history on the Old Continent. Despite this, automakers are not entirely abandoning diesel technology, as Mazda recently announced that it will keep it available for as long as customers desire.

In 2022, the Japanese automaker launched two new inline-six-cylinder engines, it was quite a surprise for the industry. One of the engines was a 3.3-liter turbocharged diesel, now available for the CX-60 ( exclusive to the European market). The engine boasts a peak output of up to 251 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque in mild-hybrid form—impressive numbers for a non-premium mid-size crossover. Furthermore, if there’s enough demand, Mazda plans to continue producing exceptional output.

“If customers want diesel, as long as we can comply with the emissions regulations in an efficient manner, as long as we can do that we would like to continue providing diesels. Demand for diesel is really weakening these days, so the need for a diesel engine may not expand so that’s why we provide this unit in an efficient manner to the markets that want the diesel engine, like Japan, Australia.”

Then there’s the new Mazda CX-90. The three-row SUV is available in Australia with a 3.3-liter turbodiesel engine. However, in the United States, enthusiasts can choose between a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain or a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six gas engine. With 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, the CX-90 is the automaker’s most powerful production model yet. Interestingly, the CX-60 and CX-90 use the same Large Product Group rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive car platform for a longitudinal engine layout.

Over the years, diesel engines have become quite popular due to their fuel efficiency and lower carbon dioxide emissions than gasoline engines. However, recent trends indicate that consumer preferences have shifted dramatically. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), diesel cars accounted for around 44 percent of the new car market share in the European Union in 2017. However, this figure has dropped sharply since then. In 2021, diesel cars only accounted for around 25 percent of the new car market share, and in June this year, the figure plummeted even further to just 13.4 percent.
