This TikTok Creator Replaced His 1988 Mazda Miata Steering Wheel With a Nintendo Wii Remote

The Mazda Miata has been one of the most iconic sports car for decades. With the new generation 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata out, the sports car has been improved to offer drivers a smooth and engaging experience. While the Miata has been the recipient of praise and adoration, what many have never seen before is a Miata equipped with a video game steering wheel. Although this sounds absurd, one TikTok creator named Tyler Atkin decided to replace the steering wheel in his 1988 Mazda Miata with a Nintendo Wii steering wheel. Many people have considered the possibility of Mario Kart in real life, but this addition takes it to the next level. 

TikToker Uses a Nintendo Wii Remote As a Steering Wheel in His 1988 Miata

Many people have played the popular video game Mario Kart. Many more have considered a real-life version. Although the latter is not as feasible, one TikToker by the name of Tyler Atkin took some inspiration from the game. Atkin decided to use a Nintendo Wii plastic steering wheel remote as his real steering wheel. Atkin removed the Nardi Torino steering wheel in his 1988 Mazda Miata and replaced it with the Wii remote. In his TikTok video, Atkin shows the process of drilling holes through the Wii controller and mounting it to his car. About the idea, Atkin said,

“I just like to mess about with stuff; keeps me busy and I thought I’d record it,” said Tyler Atkin. 

After amassing several million views on his TikTok video, Atkin eventually relented to the swarm of comments asking him to drive the modded 1988 Miata. While somewhat dangerous, Atkin obliged. He showed off his Wii Remote steering wheel setup while driving down an interstate. He later described the driving experience as “horrendous,” something that was to be expected with an 8.3-inch steering wheel.

Tyler Atkin further modded his 1988 Miata with additional Nintendo Wii accessories. Dubbed the ‘Wiatta,’ Atkin replaced the shift knob with a Nintendo Wii nunchuck controller. He also switched his e-brake handle with a Wii baseball bat. Going even further, Atkin replaced his stereo with a Nintendo Wii console. While this is certainly not recommended, it’s comical to see the iconic Miata outfitted with Nintendo accessories. Here’s hoping Atkin stays safe in his ‘Wiatta.’
