The Evolution of an Icon of the Mazda MX-5 Miata

Red Mazda Miata Sports Car Man

The Mazda MX-5 Miata holds an unwavering reputation as a fantastic sports car. Even though it’s not the most expensive or powerful sports car on the market, its rear-wheel-drive, manual transmission, and naturally-aspirated engine make for a classic driving experience. The Mazda sports car also yields an impressive weight under 2,500 pounds, especially compared to heavier models like the BMW M2. While the MX-5 Miata may not always be the automaker’s blockbuster success, it’s clear that the vehicle held a reputation as one of the Japanese automaker’s most beloved vehicles.

The unique sports car has some limits that enthusiasts can test on real roads without worrying about getting in trouble with the law. Plus, with a starting price of just $28,050* (which excludes taxes and destination fees), it’s one of the most affordable sports cars out there.

Well-seasoned MX-5 Miatas are popular, and it’s clear why. The Mazda Roadster is iconic in motoring history, with robust build quality and simplicity, making it a joy to own and drive. Plus, the MX-5 is one of the best paths to a cheap track day car, which is excellent for anyone looking to get into racing without breaking the bank. So any enthusiasts in the market for an MX-5 Miata, here’s a quick and comprehensive breakdown of each generation to make an informed decision.

First Generation (1990-1997)\

The Mazda MX-5 Miata came to be in 1989, and the vehicle quickly gained popularity among car enthusiasts. The Roadster offered a British roadster’s open-air feel, Japanese reliability and build quality, refined driving dynamics, and an affordable price point. Those who appreciated sports cars were impressed with the MX-5 from the beginning, and it’s not hard to see why. Even though low-volume sports cars are rarely worth the R&D effort, the MX-5 has remained unchanged over the years. However, a special edition in British Racing Green with a wooden shift knob came out in 1991. Plus, after the 1993 model year, the car was equipped with a larger and more powerful 1.8-liter engine.

Second Generation (1998-2005)

Then the NB generation MX-5 Miata underwent some significant changes, one aesthetic. The Miata avoided its retractable headlights and opted for flush-mounted units instead. Additionally, an update in 2001 added variable valve timing to the 1.8-liter engine, boosting its horsepower to 155. Interestingly, the NB generation is the only MX-5 Miata to offer a turbocharged engine, with the Mazdaspeed 5 reaching 178 horsepower in 2004. Anti-lock brakes were also introduced as an option, along with a 6-speed manual upgrade.

Third Generation (2006-2015)

The third-generation NC model MX-5 was designed by Moray Callum, the older brother of Ian Callum (a British Automobile Designer). One notable change for the third-gen MX-5 was the switch to a larger displacement 2.0-liter engine, which provided nearly as much power as the outgoing Mazdaspeed 5. The 2007 debut of the Power Retractable Hardtop (PRHT) was a significant change, allowing buyers to have both coupe and convertible body styles. By 2013, Mazda added the current mid-level Club trim.

Fourth Generation (2015-Present Day)

The Mazda MX-5 Miata has come a long way since its inception. The Japanese automaker’s current ND generation of the sports car came in 2015, bringing significant changes. For one, the Zoom-Zoom automaker fitted the MX-5 with a more powerful 181-horsepower engine, which gave it a little more oomph. It also had a sexier and more aggressive look, which demanded attention on the road.

2016 Mazda debuted the Retractable Fastback (RF) body style, which was a game-changer. It gave the car a more coupe-like shape, and the top panel could be tucked away, which gave the MX-5 a more Targa-style look. Another significant change was Mazda’s decision to switch the Miata from hydraulic to electric power-assisted steering.

It’s no wonder Gear Patrol reviewers have been testing out MX-5 Miatas for nearly a decade. The Mazda Miata is a fun time, even when fitted with an automatic. One of our other favorites, the Fiat 124 Spider roadster (2017-20), was built on the ND Miata and was, at one point, one of the best sleeper cars on the market, proving that automakers recognize the strength of the legendary Mazda MX-5
