Mazda Unveils the CX-70 Earlier Than Anticipated
Mazda’s CEO recently announced that it will not release a fully electric vehicle in the United States until 2026 or 2027. Despite the looming uncertainty surrounding the future of ICE-powered cars, the Japanese automaker is more focused on establishing itself as a top brand in the SUV segment.
Mazda has been working on expanding its SUV lineup and currently offers a range of models, including the CX-3, a subcompact crossover that has been in production since 2015. The Miata maker also introduced the CX-30 in 2019, which helped increase its market share in the SUV segment. The Japanese automaker has a strong presence in the compact segment, starting with models like the China-only CX-4, the CX-5 (the most popular model globally), and the recently introduced CX-50 produced in America for the Americas and Chinese market.
According to Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro, the car maker’s primary focus is establishing itself as a top brand in the SUV segment rather than releasing a fully electric vehicle in the United States until 2026 or 2027. The Japanese automaker has expanded its SUV lineup with models like the CX-3, CX-30, CX-4, CX-5, CX-50, CX-9, and the all-new CX-90. Mazda aims to secure a significant foothold in the mid-size sector with models like the CX-7 and CX-8. Additionally, the automaker decided to create another pair of twins – the CX-70 for North America and the CX-80 for the rest of the international markets.
Mazda started production of the CX-50 compact crossover SUV at MTMUS (Mazda Toyota Manufacturing US) in Huntsville, Alabama, early last year (2022). The Mazda CX-50 proved an excellent alternative for enthusiasts who enjoy the experience of the CX-5 but with a hint of ruggedness. Now, America eagerly awaits the next double-digit installment in the CX series as the rotary maker continues to expand its SUV lineup and establish itself as a top brand in the segment.
The Japanese automaker is exploring the idea of filling the gap between the 2024 CX-50 and the CX-90 three-row crossover. The CX-50 starts at around $33,000, while the CX-90 begins at $39,595* (or $47,445* for the PHEV version) (*all pricing excludes taxes and destination fees). The automaker plans to fill this slot with the CX-60 in Europe and other regions. This original mid-size SUV model introduced Mazda’s all-new RWD (rear-wheel drive) and AWD (all-wheel drive) platform with a longitudinal engine layout and an option to fit larger inline-six cylinder mills.
While the CX-60 may not be available in the United States, Mazda plans to introduce the first-ever CX-70 to fill that slot, but it will be a while before the SUV impacts the US since the automaker made no mention of a 2024 model year. The Halo Oto channel on YouTube has provided some fresh automotive info corroborated with virtual designs, and there are whispers and CGI ideas about the new Mazda CX-70. Nonetheless, Mazda enthusiasts will have to wait and see what the automaker has in store for its latest addition to the CX series.
According to the Halo Oto channel on YouTube, the introduction of the new Mazda CX-70 has been postponed until next year as a 2025 model year. However, for those who can’t wait, the channel’s resident pixel master has provided depictions of the upcoming model in gray and orange colors. Images of the CX-70 reveal a potential coupe-SUV-like design, which raises the question of whether Mazda will go down that route or opt for a different approach. It remains to be seen what the CX-70 will look like, but the digital renderings provide a glimpse of what Mazda enthusiasts can look forward to.
