Will Mazda fans finally see a successor to the iconic Mazda RX-7? If recent rumors are true, fans may very well be rewarded. According to rumors from the Japanese site Best Car Web, Mazda will be partnering with Toyota to create a pair of sports cars. What these two cars will be, we’re not sure, but given the state of Toyota’s battery technology and Mazda’s rotary engine, it could be something spectacular. As of late, many automakers have been working toward electric vehicles. While Mazda has received some criticism for its MX-30, the Japanese automaker has been adamant about implementing a rotary engine that will serve as a range extender. This rotary engine could also be used to power hybrids. We’ll take a closer look at these rumors and see what consumers can expect from the two automakers.

Mazda & Toyota Partner for New Sports Cars

According to a rumor from the Japanese website Best Car Web, Mazda will be partnering with Toyota to collaborate on two new sports cars. The two automakers will combine their technologies to produce a GR-branded EV and a successor to the iconic RX-7. Toyota would likely launch a GR-inspired EV with a dual motor setup and all-wheel drive. As for a potential RX-7 successor, this new sports car would have to echo that same passion and performance that drove the popularity of the iconic luxury coupe.

Mazda has been determined to implement its rotary engine into its future lineup. The all-new Mazda CX-60 is one of Mazda’s first SUVs to come paired with the rotary engine. Running on Mazda’s new e-Skyactiv platform, the CX-60 proves to be quite powerful with its plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. The crossover SUV  achieves 322 horsepower and 369lb-ft of torque with a 2.5L gas engine and an electric motor. Mazda is hoping it can top its most powerful vehicle by collaborating with Toyota. The goal will be to produce a sports car (either a PHEV or EV) with even higher performance standards.

Mazda and Toyota’s sports cars will likely share the same platform. If the two automakers manage to co-develop a battery electric sports platform, this will greatly reduce expenses. Toyota will most likely aim for a flashier sports car to show off its battery technology while Mazda would aim to convince consumers of its ability to make a powerful BEV. To further solidify this belief, a successor to the RX-7 would be the perfect vehicle to gain support. For now, we’ll have to stay tuned for more information, but this is great news for both automakers.
