Inside the Mazda SP Concept Lies a Hybrid Rotary Powertrain
Mazda has recently unveiled a new concept car in Japan called the Iconic SP. The show car boasts a distinctive two-rotor rotary EV system that can burn a range of fuels, including hydrogen, while also being able to generate electricity with a carbon-neutral fuel. According to Mazda, the sports car has been designed specifically for car enthusiasts who enjoy the thrill of driving.
Mazda’s focus on providing an exceptional driving experience with the Iconic SP is evident in its design. The car is designed with a low center of gravity, thanks to its lightweight and compact rotary engine, which can be mounted low. Additionally, Mazda aims to achieve a perfect 50:50 weight distribution with this car, further enhancing handling and driving pleasure.
“Mazda will always deliver vehicles that remind people that cars are pure joy and an indispensable part of their lives. As a car-loving company that mass-produces the inspiring mobility experience, we are committed to shaping the future with our partners sharing the same goal, as well as our fans, where everyone can proudly say, ‘We love cars.’ With such a strong will, Mazda is committed to enrich life-in-motion for those we serve.”
The two-rotor rotary EV system in the Iconic SP is designed to function as a power extender instead of directly powering the wheels. Additionally, it can also act as a power supply for running appliances if the car is taken off the grid for a vacation. According to Mazda, the system can provide enough power to sustain a family for over a week.
Mazda’s minimalistic approach echoes throughout the interior of the Iconic SP. The sports car features a simple three-spoke steering wheel, accompanied by a digital screen behind it and another small screen to its right. The center tunnel has four switches, which have a design that resembles a gated manual shifter. The interior surfaces of the car appear coated in an Alcantara-like material.
Mazda has even given special consideration to the color of the Iconic SP. The Japanese automaker coated the concept in Viola red, which the automaker says was chosen because it accentuates the car’s shape while also reflecting the company’s corporate philosophy of “enriching life-in-motion for those we serve.”
The Iconic SP concept car is larger than the current MX-5 Miata in dimensions. It measures 164.6 inches in length, 72.8 inches in width, and 45.3 inches in height. Compared to the MX-5, the Iconic SP is about 10 inches longer, four inches wider, and three inches shorter. The wheelbase of the Iconic SP is also more extensive than the MX-5 at 102 inches, which is approximately 11 inches longer. However, the extra size comes with excess weight – the MX-5 is around 800 pounds lighter than the concept car.
The targeted specifications of the Iconic SP are sure to excite any driving enthusiast. The Mazda SP holds a curb weight of less than 3,200 pounds and an output of around 365 horsepower. Mazda has always focused on the driving experience over raw horsepower numbers, and the current MX-5 is an excellent example of this. The Iconic SP looks to continue this tradition with an advanced powertrain and a stunning new look.
