Mazda has been around for over a century now. Over the years, the Japanese automaker has become renowned for perfecting the rotary engine and producing quality vehicles. From luxury cars to sports cars, Mazda has been at the forefront of high-performance vehicles. With the global auto industry turning its focus on electric vehicles, the automaker has also turned away from its beginnings in favor of electric SUVs like the MX-30. As Mazda competes to launch its own line of electric vehicles, we thought we’d take a look at some of the fastest cars Mazda has produced over the years. Although Mazda still has new plans involving trademarks and logos, cars like the Mazda Vision Coupe are all that remain as hope for Mazda enthusiasts. Of course, Mazda is the only one who knows what’s in store for future cars, so for now, we’ll travel back and take a look at five of the fastest cars to come from the automaker.

5) Mazda Mazdaspeed 6 (0-60 Mph in 5.4 Seconds)

First on the list is the Mazda Mazdaspeed 6. This sporty sedan is a higher-performance version of the standard sedan launched in 2005. It arrived in 2006 and featured a 2.3L MZR I4 engine that produced 268 horsepower. The North American model came with 274 horsepower, but this was revised to 270 horsepower in 2007. This sport sedan made good use of its performance boost which made for a great driving experience. Regarding handling, the Mazdaspeed 6 came with an all-wheel-drive set-up that provided excellent traction. This sport sedan can go 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds which is quite impressive for a sedan. The Mazdaspeed 6 is a fun classic car that speaks to the fact that Mazda knows quality.

4) Mazda Mazdaspeed 3 (0-60 Mph in 5.4 Seconds)

Next up is the Mazda Mazdaspeed 3 which was launched in 2007. This hatchback came with several different variants, but the fastest was the 2010 edition which featured a 2.3L turbocharged engine capable of 263 horsepower. This particular model also featured styling updates which gave it a more sporty look. This consisted of an updated grille and headlights that highlighted a performance aesthetic. The rear of the hatchback also came with narrower taillights and performance tires. As for speed, the Mazdaspeed 3 can reach 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds. This makes it the fastest model in the Mazdaspeed lineup. It combines the fun of a hatchback with the high-performance of a sports car which makes it a fun vehicle to drive.

3) Mazda RX-7 (1991) (0-60 Mph in 5.3 Seconds)

Next is the Mazda RX-7 which was launched in 1991. The engine used in this car was the first mass-produced sequential twin-turbocharger system to be exported from Japan. By the end of its production, the RX-7 had an impressive 238 horsepower. This sports car was entirely performance-based as seen with the sporty styling of the car. The success of the RX-7 could be seen everywhere as it won multiple awards. Its handling was also praised by enthusiasts and reviewers everywhere. The Mazda RX-7 is one of the fastest Mazda vehicles with a 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds. The high performance combined with impeccable handling makes the Mazda RX-7 one of the best cars on the list.

2) Mazda RX-7 Type R (2001) (0-60 Mph in 5.1 Seconds)

The Mazda RX-7 featured many variations but the Type R is one that stands above the rest. The Type R came as a performance boosted version of the standard RX-7. It received much praise for its tuned engine which was capable of 280 horsepower. The engine could reach higher revolutions, almost 8000 rpm, which made the Type R an outstanding performance car. As for speed, the Mazda RX-7 Type R can go 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds, slightly beating the standard RX-7. The performance-based upgrades make the Type R a great all-around vehicle that is exceptionally fast.

1) Mazda RX-7 Spirit R (0-60 Mph in 5.0 Seconds)

Time for the fastest Mazda vehicle, the Mazda RX-7 Spirit R. This RX-7 variant was a special edition model that was the last release in the RX-7 lineup. It really demonstrated Mazda’s ability to create a high-performance car. Not only was the Spirit R fun to drive, but it also reached a horsepower of 252 which many claimed wasn’t even the peak of its performance. Many enthusiasts loved the sports car and with its 0-60 mph time of 5.0 seconds, it became the fastest car ever made by Mazda. This car had a limited availability with only 1,500 being made. This lends itself to the exclusiveness of the high-performance sports car. Truly, Mazda knows how to make a sports car. We will have to see what they aim for with their upcoming electric vehicles and whether any will receive extra attention regarding high-performance and speed.
