Mazda is stepping onto the EV playing field with its brand-new, all-electric MX-30. The first all-electric vehicle to be released from Mazda, the MX-30 combines Mazda’s innovative design and vision. The result? An electric SUV that goes beyond conventional expectations. With the MX-30, Mazda focused on bringing consumers an electric vehicle that feels empowering and looks stylish. First showcased at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Shop, Mazda’s MX-30 will come equipped with a 144-hp electric motor and a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. It will feature a front-wheel drive which, in combination with a new powertrain, will enable 200lb-ft of torque. Mazda is making use of recent enhancements to its Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture to provide drivers with stellar dynamics. This stems from the use of a rotary generator which will be used to charge the battery.

For charging options, Mazda has partnered with ChargePoint. Though the range of the MX-30 has not yet been determined, Mazda has stated that MX-30 owners will have multiple charging options at home and while traveling. Access to public Level 2 and DC fast charging solutions will be available. It is estimated that the MX-30’s 35.5 kWh battery will be able to be charged to 80 percent in about 36 minutes using DC fast charging.

Interior

Mazda designed the MX-30 with the consumer in mind. Utilizing their signature KODO design, Mazda aimed for a vehicle that would “embody the dynamic beauty of life.” The KODO design is the brainchild of Ikuo Maeda, the Executive Officer and General Manager of the Design Division at Mazda. On incorporating the revolutionary KODO design, Maeda says that the emphasis was on creating a vehicle that, “is not a means of getting from A to B, but actually a partner you can rely on and that inspires you.” When looking at Mazda’s MX-30, we can see that their design team made use of environmentally friendly materials like heritage cork and recycled plastics to create an interior that offers driver’s a feeling of openness.

Low-impact and sustainable materials give the MX-30 interior a feeling of warmth and comfort. A homage to Mazda’s cork manufacturing roots, the use of heritage cork for the console tray and door grips offers a unique visual aesthetic that is also eco-friendly. The heritage cork center console comes with an electronic shifter, a multi-function commander knob, and shortcut buttons that make using the Mazda Connect infotainment system easy. A seven-inch touchscreen display offers drivers access to their contacts and apps along with a climate control panel.

For safety, Mazda’s MX-30 incorporates i-Activsense advanced safety and driver assistance technologies. These provide collision mitigation through the use of a Smart Brake Support system (SBS). They also provide lane-keeping features that help reduce accidents and prevent injury. Along with the i-Activsense technology comes an electric G-Vectoring Control Plus feature that delivers precise and responsive steering. These safety features allow MX-30 drivers to feel safe and secure.

Exterior

Mazda utilized its signature KODO design for the MX-30’s interior and exterior. In being consistent with the theme of openness, Mazda’s MX-30 features a pillarless freestyle door system that offers drivers the freedom of creativity without sacrificing functionality. The fibrous material used for the door trim continues the theme of unrestrictiveness.

Slated to hit American markets in the fall of 2021, the MX-30 will first be available for California residents. The all-new EV SUV will be available in more states later in 2022 depending on demand. Another treat to look forward to is a plug-in hybrid vehicle which Mazda has said will be coming in 2022. Mazda fans will have options to choose from as the plug-in hybrid will utilize an electric motor with a rotary gasoline engine. Whether it’s the all-electric MX-30 or the hybrid plug-in, Mazda has taken care to give their drivers a signature freshness both in style and function.
