Unveiling the 2024 Mazda MX-5: Embracing the Thrill of Manual Transmission in a Modern Sports Car Landscape
In recent years, automatic transmissions have become standard across the globe for manufacturers, regardless of the type of cars they produce. While transitioning from a manual to an automatic transmission makes sense for most drivers, as it allows them to focus more on the road, many still value the unique satisfaction and connection provided by manual transmissions.
Although manual transmissions are becoming increasingly rare in sports cars, a few models, like the iconic Mazda MX-5 Miata, continue to offer them. Here, we delve into what makes the 2024 MX-5 stand out in the world of sports cars. While the market for sports cars with manual transmissions is shrinking, there are still appealing options like the BMW M2 and the Porsche 718, albeit at higher price points. However, the Subaru BRZ remains a more affordable alternative, though the MX-5 manages to undercut it in terms of pricing.
Starting at $28,985, the 2024 Mazda MX-5 is the most economical sports car offering a manual transmission. With its reputation for being an enjoyable daily driver, the MX-5 maintains its affordability while providing a thrilling experience.
Unlike several other 2024 Mazda models equipped with the SKYACTIV automatic transmission, the MX-5 comes standard with the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission, known for its reduced weight and compact size. Enhancing the MX-5’s manual transmission is a short-throw shifter, designed to expedite gear shifts and maintain higher revs, thus improving power output and overall driving experience. Additionally, all manual MX-5s for 2024 are equipped with an upgraded limited-slip differential.
Under the hood, the 2024 MX-5 boasts a potent 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, generating 181 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Despite its modest power output, the MX-5’s lightweight design at 2,341 pounds ensures agility and responsiveness. Fuel efficiency, while less critical in sports cars, remains respectable at 26 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway.
Offered in three trims, each with distinct features, the MX-5 ensures variety while remaining competitive with its rivals like the Subaru BRZ and BMW Z4. The mid-range Club trim, starting at $32,485, adds sport-tuned suspension and Bilstein dampers along with interior upgrades such as a Bose nine-speaker audio system and heated seats. The top-tier Grand Touring trim, priced at $34,285, further enhances the experience with a six-speed automatic transmission, adaptive front headlights, and Mazda Navigation.
In addition to the base MX-5 Miata, the MX-5 Miata RF model returns for 2024, featuring a retractable hardtop roof. With a starting price of $37,010, the MX-5 RF remains competitive in the budget sports car market.
While the MX-5 RF shares the same engine as the base MX-5, the added weight of the retractable hardtop slightly affects its performance. Nevertheless, Mazda claims that refinements to the power steering have improved handling, maintaining the MX-5’s renowned balance and stability.
Interior features across all trims include an 8.8-inch full-color center display, black cloth-trimmed seats, and leather-wrapped steering wheel, shifter, and parking brake handle. Infotainment options include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Alexa, and Bluetooth connectivity.
Externally, the MX-5 retains its timeless design with subtle updates for 2024, such as new wheel designs and LED lighting elements. While the MX-5 may lack the power of some rivals like the BMW Z4, its superior handling and responsive manual transmission make it a compelling option in the sports car segment.
