The Mazda RX-9 Makes Plans to Replace the RX-7
The Mazda RX-9 has the potential to create a lasting legacy. So we’re excited to witness what kind of design and engineering Mazda puts into this vehicle. Based on the rendering, it seems that the exterior of the RX-9 will be a beautiful expression of the Japanese automaker’s aesthetic vision, featuring its trademarked Kodo Design. Additionally, we expect the RX-9 to have a low ground clearance and an elongated body that will turn heads. The imposing fascia, lanky hood, and extended rear windshield make for a sleek and stylish look. Moreover, the Kodo Design emphasizes clean lines and lacks curves, giving the RX-9 a modern and imposing feel.
The upcoming Mazda RX-9 may embody a classic, driver-centered approach to interior design, which is a refreshing change from the trend of overwhelming technology and futuristic aesthetics. The RX-9 may feature a simple yet timeless cabin with a minimalist theme emphasizing retro styling and avoiding unnecessary clutter. The Mazda sports cars design philosophy is often employed by manufacturers who aim to create industry icons rather than fleeting commodities, similar to the 2024 Bugatti Chiron, which does not include an infotainment screen despite its $4 million price tag. Additionally, the RX-9 will benefit from Mazda’s advanced G-Vectoring Technology, improving handling and maneuverability.
There has been a lot of speculation lately about the powertrain of the forthcoming RX-7 successor. It seems likely that the RX-9 will follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, featuring an updated version of the rotary engine. In the past, Wankel engines were criticized for their poor reliability and low efficiency, often overshadowing their impressive performance capabilities. These engines were even partly responsible for preventing the production of the Mercedes C111. Despite this, there are still some merits to rotary engines. For instance, the Mazda RX-7 maintained its speed and agility thanks to the balanced weight distribution achieved by its rotary engine. It is also worth noting that Mazda was only able to partially maximize the potential of this engine model due to environmental regulations. However, the Japanese automaker appears to have found a solution with its latest patent.
For the RX-9, Mazda has plans for a hybrid setup with an electric tri-rotary engine, including two electric motors at the front and a third one at the back. While we don’t know the exact numbers, the electric motors at the front axles may generate 46 horsepower (34 kilowatts), while the third motor will have 36 horsepower (25 kilowatts). The sports car’s three motors will work with an ICE and should produce 350-400 horsepower in a P-HEV configuration. The RX-9 will likely incorporate Mazda’s SkyActiv technology, encompassing various technologies from gearboxes to engines. The hybrid system should run on an e-Skyactiv-G 48-volt. The SkyActivBody bears a chassis and body that provides an eight-percent weight reduction and 30 percent extra stiffness, resulting in better stability at high speeds.
It’s incredible to see how the Mazda RX-7 has maintained its pristine reputation over the years, and even more so, its value continues to increase. Nowadays, enthusiasts can sell a used Mazda RX-7 for as much as $50,000, a testament to the car’s lasting impact. It’s exciting to think about the future of Mazda’s sports cars, particularly the RX-9. From what we’ve heard, it sounds like the RX-9 will carry on the legacy of the RX-7 and bring some serious energy to the table. We look forward to what the future holds!
