Mazda is ready to make some changes to its lineup. The Japanese automaker announced that the CX-9 will no longer be available after the 2023 model year. The Mazda CX-9 has been around since 2007 and served as a three-row option, but alas, its replacement is the recently released 2024 Mazda CX-90.

Mazda is discontinuing the CX-9; there appears to be a more significant shift happening within the crossover lineup. The CX-9 comes to life on Mazda’s transverse-engine platform and utilizes a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. In contrast, the CX-90 is built on the automaker’s new longitudinal-engine platform and offers a turbocharged inline-six engine or a plug-in-hybrid powertrain. Furthermore, the CX-90 is more upscale, with its higher trim levels reaching above $60,000, while the CX-9 tops at around $50,000. Although the CX-90’s starting price of $40,970 is similar to the outgoing CX-9’s $40,125, this shift in focus is noteworthy.

The CX-9 debuted in 2007, the latest second-generation model came out in 2016, and the SUV is an impeccable vehicle. The driving dynamics are smooth, and the interior materials are top-notch. However, one downside is the cramped third-row seat, which can be uncomfortable for passengers. Despite this issue, it’s still a phenomenal SUV, and the third row is a fun time for the kiddies. Nonetheless, the CX-9 began to show its age, but what an unprecedented run.

The Mazda’s SUV lineup will expand later this year (2023). Reports suggest that the CX-70, a mid-size model with two rows, will join the CX-90 soon. From what we know, the CX-70 will use the new longitudinal-engine platform and inline-six engine, just like the CX-60 introduced in other parts of the world. Although we don’t have any official images yet, it’s expected that the CX-70 will have a similar appearance to its CX-60 sibling.

Interestingly, the Mazda CX-9 sales are more substantial than last year (2022). The automaker increased by 7 percent so far in 2023. Mazda sold 17,359 CX-9s in the first half of 2023, a bit more than the 5704 CX-90s it sold during the same period. It’s uncertain when production of the Mazda CX-9 officially ends, but for now, some 2023 models will likely maintain its availability at dealerships in the U.S.
