Revolutionary Mazda Iconic SP Concept: A Viral Sensation Reimagining Eco-Friendly Driving
The Mazda Iconic SP concept stole the spotlight at last year’s Japan Mobility Show and continues to generate buzz nearly half a year later. Today, it’s evident that the concept’s popularity persists as a simple social media post about it quickly went viral.
Recently, Mazda announced that the car is now on exhibit at their Hiroshima headquarters, inviting visitors to come and admire it. Although the duration of the concept’s display remains uncertain, the announcement post garnered over 400,000 views and 6,700 likes.
A particularly intriguing photo depicts a team of three individuals delicately unloading the concept from a flatbed truck. Maneuvering the low-slung design proved to be a challenge due to minimal clearance. Nonetheless, the concept was successfully relocated into the building, meticulously cleaned, and put on display.
As a reminder, the Iconic SP was introduced as a “new type of compact sports car” that blends eco-friendliness with simplicity and the pure enjoyment of driving. Mazda hasn’t divulged many specifics, but the concept boasts a sleek Viola Red exterior featuring hidden headlights, a slender grille, curvaceous bodywork, butterfly doors, and muscular rear haunches.
Inside, the sporty ambiance continues with a minimalist cabin housing a flat-bottom steering wheel, a standalone digital instrument cluster, and a compact infotainment system. Additionally, the model boasts eco-friendly upholstery and a substantial center tunnel.
While details about the powertrain remain somewhat vague, Mazda previously mentioned that the car is equipped with a “two-rotor rotary EV system,” comprising a battery pack and a rotary engine capable of burning various fuels like hydrogen. This setup delivers an impressive output of 365 hp (272 kW / 370 PS). Moreover, the model features a vehicle-to-load function, enabling it to supply power during camping trips or outages.
Weighing in at 3,197 lbs (1,450 kg) with a balanced weight distribution of around 50:50, the concept offers a glimpse into the potential future of the MX-5. Notably, it’s approximately 10.5 inches (267 mm) longer than the current model, with an additional 11 inches (279 mm) between the wheels.
