New Mazda Signature Color Underway
Mazda was always the automaker to watch, and it’s obvious to see why once enthusiasts bear witness to the vehicle’s luxury appeal with a price tag that doesn’t match. The Japanese automaker knows what it takes to captivate the world, and its paint colors play a critical role. Mazda’s Soul Red Crystal Metallic color is one of the richest hues of any automaker. Although Soul Red is the first step in the ‘Zoom-Zoom’ automaker’s captivation, Mazda says the next exterior paint color will pursue a different route to charming people.
Jo Stenuit is a Mazda designer who sat down with Chasing Cars, and the interview revealed that the automaker might pursue blue or green for its next signature paint color. Additionally, Stenuit would say that European buyers favor a less vibrant color, so a darker color makes sense.
Darker colors also stretch a long way in the US, with 35 percent of the automaker’s 2021 vehicles sporting a white exterior and 18 percent wearing black. Mazda’s more electrifying colors like red and green comprise up to 7 percent of the market.
The Soul Red Crystal Metallic story stretches beyond the automaker’s vision. Our story begins with Mazda attempting to replicate a paint job that belonged to a concept vehicle. The concept vehicle premiered with a distinctive and elegant exterior, but the Red Metallic required a lot of participation.
Mazda stated that technique was perfect for concept cars, especially since it complimented the Kodo design language. However, hand-painting thousands of vehicles doesn’t sound too productive. So the Japanese automaker had to program its robots to recreate the same process to achieve the same captivating color.
The Soul Red Crystal Metallic had consumers spellbound in 2012. The Soul Red exterior was known as Mazda’s “Takuminuri” paint process. Takuminuri translates to “artisan coloring,” and from the Soul Red Mazda continues to leave consumers spellbound with the addition of Machine Gray in 2016.
Mazda charges additional for most colors. For example, the Polymetal Gray Metallic is an additional $395. Additionally, the Soul Red and Machine Gray are an additional $595. Yet even with the upcharge, Mazda holds an unbeatable price. Other premium paints, such as the Audi’s Sebring Black Crystal and BMW’s Tanzanite Blue II Metallic, are as costly as $1,900. Yet, exclusive quality colors prove more than popular since Audi sold out of its custom colors in 2021, and Mazda will look to do the same with the next tantalizing hue.
