Mazda will electrify the global automotive landscape by introducing its first-ever global electric sedan, the Mazda EZ-6. This fall (2024), the all-electric sedan marks a significant leap for the Japanese automaker, showcasing its commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Mazda, which has historically been a quieter player in the electric vehicle (EV) arena, is stepping up its game with the EZ-6. While the brand’s previous EV endeavor, the MX-30, struggled in the US market and was discontinued, the new EZ-6 represents a bold step forward. This global electric sedan is poised to redefine Mazda’s presence in the EV sector, especially as the company looks to rebound from declining sales figures.

Mazda’s new EV sedan is the aftermath of the automaker’s strategic partnership with Changan Auto, specifically through their joint venture, Changan Mazda. The vehicle will debut first in China and Europe, reflecting Mazda’s focus on the world’s largest EV market. The EZ-6 may be a worthy successor to the Mazda 6, blending stylish design with cutting-edge electric technology.

Under the hood, the Mazda EZ-6 promises impressive performance, with an anticipated range of up to 372 miles (600 km) on the CLTC cycle. The sedan will feature Changan’s advanced intelligent driving technology, including Level 2.5 autonomous driving assistance. Its tech suite features a 7nm Qualcomm SA8155P chip, four high-definition panoramic cameras, and 12 ultrasonic radars, offering a glimpse into the future of driving with autonomous capabilities and remote parking.

Despite the excitement surrounding the EZ-6, US consumers might need to temper their enthusiasm. With the sedan’s production based in China and Mazda’s historical focus on SUVs and trucks in the US, it remains uncertain whether the EZ-6 will make its way to American shores. Mazda’s current US lineup favors crossovers like the CX-5, which remains the brand’s top seller.

Mazda’s entry into the global EV market with the EZ-6 signifies a significant shift. Still, the brand must refine its strategy to make a lasting impact, particularly in markets like the US, where electric vehicle competition is fierce.
