Mazda created waves at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, dropping hints about the potential resurgence of the rotary sports car. Alongside this revelation, the brand showcased two customized concepts under the Mazda Spirit Racing banner, signaling more than just a mere display at Japan’s SEMA equivalent.

The Spirit Racing RS, based on the locally-sold MX-5 Miata (known as the Roadster), and the Spirit Racing 3, derived from the Mazda3 hatchback, are not merely showpieces. These concepts are actively transitioning into production, set to be offered under the Mazda Spirit Racing brand. While comprehensive details are still pending, the ongoing development emphasizes the brand’s commitment to providing track-focused cars with enhanced suspension and aerodynamics, drawing insights from the Super Taikyu Series.

Beyond the performance enhancements, both the Miata and Mazda3 have undergone cosmetic changes inside. The specific alterations remain undisclosed, leaving enthusiasts curious about potential power upgrades. Although MX-5 Program Manager Shigeki Saito alluded to “very cool special editions” for the beloved roadster, any confirmation of enhanced engine capabilities is yet to surface.

Notably, both concepts share the Mazda Spirit Racing logo and ride on Rays wheels equipped with Bridgestone Potenza tires. The Miata, based on the recently launched ND3, features Recaro bucket seats, a racing harness, and an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel with a distinctive red 12 o’clock mark. The exterior boasts a body kit with decals, a single enlarged exhaust tip (in lieu of two smaller ones), Brembo brakes, and discreet blacked-out badges.

In parallel, the Mazda3 exhibits an unusually large front splitter, enlarged side skirts, and a carbon fiber rear spoiler. Its visual enhancements extend to larger exhaust tips, darkened badges, Brembo brakes, and what appears to be a stiffer suspension judging by the lower ride height. The cabin receives a lift with body-hugging Recaro seats, red stitching, and Alcantara details, injecting a sporty flair into the standard interior.

The trajectory of Mazda Spirit Racing seems to be evolving into a tacit revival of the iconic Mazdaspeed brand. Enthusiasts are left anticipating the rotary sports car, initially previewed by the Iconic SP concept, to eventually claim its position at the apex of Mazda’s lineup. As these production plans unfold, Mazda’s commitment to infusing excitement and performance into its range becomes increasingly evident, promising a future where Spirit Racing signifies more than a concept— it becomes a dynamic force in Mazda’s pursuit of automotive excellence.
