Mazda to Revitalize Manual Transmissions With 2022 MX-5 Miata
Mazda is hoping to encourage more manual driving. The Japanese automaker is letting manual fans know that they are on their side with its latest decision. For the 2022 model year, Mazda will be removing the automatic transmission from two of the three trims for the MX-5. Typically, automakers remove manual transmissions with new performance cars, but Mazda is going back to its roots. Lately, Mazda has been focusing on SUVs like the CX-5, CX-50, and CX-60. These have been well received, but it seems Mazda wants to let its sports car fans know they still matter. Mazda has been hinting about a potential PHEV powertrain, but for now, it seems like consumers will be seeing the return of the manual transmission combined with Mazda’s SkyActiv architecture. This will surely excite some Mazda fans so we’ll dive in further and discuss the 2022 Mazda MX-5 and its new additions.
2022 Mazda MX-5 Receives Manual Transmission
Mazda will be removing the automatic transmission from two of three trims for the 2022 MX-5 Miata. This decision comes ahead of the new 2022 model year. Consumers wanting an automatic transmission will have to opt for the Grand Touring trim as it will be the only MX-5 with an automatic transmission. The MX-5 will come equipped with a 2.0L inline-four cylinder engine that’s capable of 181 horsepower. Paired with a six-speed manual, the MX-5 should drive and handle smoothly. Mazda recently revised the 2.0L so it should be even more responsive and precise than before.
The 2022 MX-5 Miata will start at an MSRP of $28,315 (plus destination fee). Both Sport and Club trims will come equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. The Club trim will start at an MSRP of $31,815 (plus destination fee). For those wanting a six-speed automatic transmission, they will have to choose the Grand Touring trim which starts at an MSRP of $33,815 (plus destination fee). The Grand Touring trim is the top-level trim and as such it will feature dark silver 17-inch wheels and Terracotta leather seats.Â
For those wanting to drive the 2022 MX-5 Miata as intended, the manual transmission is the way to go. Mazda’s powertrain and SkyActiv vehicle architecture lend its vehicles a powerful edge when it comes to driver engagement. Still, there are some who want the simple ease of an automatic. Either way, the 2022 MX-5 Miata serves as a comfortable and stylish sports car that embodies Mazda and what it stands for.Â
