Mazda to File New Trademark Featuring R Logo

Mazda recently filed an application in Japan for a new trademark. As seen above, the sharp and angled white R logo trademark doesn’t leave much room for interpretation. Aside from the fact that the trademark application was filed on June 3 of this year (2021), there has been no mention of the logo. The lack of any information or rumors has many wondering what Mazda could be up to.
New Trademark Filed by Mazda
The angular R logo seems reminiscent of the old Spirit R badge seen on the Mazda RX-7. This leads to some speculation that the new trademark could be for a new coupe in the works. Mazda has made its name offering sports coupes and luxury cars. But from what we’ve seen as of late, Mazda has a new vision that involves electrification. Mazda recently announced plans to build 13 electric vehicles over the next decade. Production has already begun as seen with the all-new, all-electric MX-30. Efforts to electrify vehicles have also been seen as with the Mazda MX-5 Miata. With so much on their plate, the question of what Mazda could have in mind with their new trademark leaves many tuning in.
It should be noted that the trademark logo has only been filed through as an application. It is not official yet so speculation may continue to run wild in the next few weeks. Plans for a new car may seem likely, but a rotary engine could be in the works as well. Mazda did unveil the Mazda Vision Coupe recently so the logo could be for a new line of luxury cars. A new MX-5 Spirit perhaps?
As for a rotary engine, Mazda has been talking of incorporating a new rotary engine to pair with its new electric vehicles. A new rotary engine could also be used for their plug-in hybrids. It could be a part of Mazda’s plans to offer five hybrids, three electric vehicles, and five plug-in hybrids in the next decade.
Were it another automaker, speculation about a new trademark could revolve around different criteria, but Mazda is known for its sport and luxury vehicles. Using their innovative KODO design concept, Mazda has stated that they want to focus on designing vehicles with life-like qualities. The R logo is typically a symbol for fun innovation behind the wheel, so perhaps it could involve new driver safety and technology features that would enhance the driving experience.
With all the possibilities, any sort of speculation could be accurate or near. A new performance-oriented vehicle could please Mazda fans before the switch to hybrid and EV. In the same vein, rotary engines could be redesigned to accommodate the new hybrid vehicles. Only Mazda knows what is in store, but fans everywhere will be waiting expectantly.
