Mazda Spirit Racing: A Revival in the Fast Lane
Excitement is building at Mazda as they unveil plans for a new sporting sub-brand, Mazda Spirit Racing. This bold initiative is poised to adorn higher-performance editions of the Miata and Mazda3, pending approval for production of two concept cars.
Showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon, Mazda Spirit Racing versions of the Miata and Mazda3 took center stage, marking the dawn of a new era under the leadership of the recently appointed president, Masahiro Moro. Moro, with a vision to rekindle the glory days, proudly announced the establishment of a factory motorsports division—Mazda Spirit Racing, the first of its kind in 25 years since MazdaSpeed.
Since 2021, Mazda has been actively competing in Japan’s Super Taikyu series, a commitment that expands in 2024. Through a strategic partnership with Gran Turismo, Mazda will provide e-sports players with the unique opportunity to transition from the virtual world to the real racetrack. Notably, Mazda plans to introduce carbon-neutral race cars, featuring a bio-diesel powered Mazda3 and an e-fuel Miata.
These innovative race cars serve as the inspiration for two concepts currently under evaluation for production. The Roadster (Miata) Spirit Racing RS Concept boasts a modified two-liter motor and enhanced suspension, promising an exhilarating driving experience. Simultaneously, the Mazda Spirit Racing Mazda3 show car flaunts stylish carbon accessories, including a new front spoiler and rear wing. While final specifications are pending, design maestro Ikuo ‘Speedy’ Maeda assures that it will capture the essence of motorsports embodied by the No 55 car competing in Super Taikyu.
Beyond the high-performance vehicles, Mazda Spirit Racing is set to launch a range of merchandise, including watches, catering to fervent Mazda motorsports enthusiasts.
The shift towards performance-focused initiatives raises questions about Mazda’s traditional emphasis on SUVs. The answer lies in the leadership duo at the helm—President Moro, an accomplished engineer and marketer with a rich history in overseeing Mazda’s racing program in the U.S.A., and Design Chief Maeda, a skilled club-level racer. With this dynamic duo steering the course, the future of Mazda promises to be one of speed, innovation, and a renewed commitment to delivering high-performance vehicles that resonate with enthusiasts worldwide. Mazda Spirit Racing is not merely a sub-brand; it’s a manifestation of a newfound passion for the fast lane.
