With the world focused on climate conservation efforts, many automakers have been stepping up to contribute. These contributions have mainly revolved around reducing carbon emissions and, as of late, bringing consumers environmentally-friendly electric vehicles. Mazda is just one of these automakers aiming to transform the automotive industry. Mazda has released information about one electric vehicle already, the MX-30 SUV. Available in the fall of 2021, the MX-30 will utilize Mazda’s new SKYACTIV EV Scalable Architecture platform. The MX-30 will come equipped with a 144-hp electric motor and a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. As the first EV announced by Mazda, the MX-30 offers some insight into how Mazda will design its future EVs. One note about the MX-30 is that it will feature a rotary generator which will be used to charge the battery. This is interesting because the use of a rotary generator could allow Mazda to extend the ranges on its future EVs.

The Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030

Mazda recently announced its upcoming plan, ‘Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030.’ Essentially, the plan outlines Mazda’s efforts to become carbon neutral by 2050 by adapting the technology used in electric vehicles to retrofit their current model line. The consensus is that Mazda will launch 13 electric vehicles and trims between 2022 and 2025. These will consist of five hybrids, three electric vehicles, and five plug-in hybrids. All will make use of Mazda’s SKYACTIV Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture platform.

SKYACTIV Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture

Mazda’s new SKYACTIV Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture platform is a unique electric vehicle platform that will be incorporated in all of Mazda’s EVs. The platform will be used for EVs of all sizes and shapes. It will help Mazda share information, technology, and feedback between all of its departments. The goal is for Mazda to transform 100 percent of its products to be at least partially electric by 2030. Additionally, Mazda wants EVs to make up 25% of its model line. By using its SKYACTIV platform, Mazda is making sure that it will be able to hit its goals both effectively and timely.

Technology and Safety

Mazda wants to emerge as a leader in the electric vehicle industry in the upcoming years. To do so, it is making use of the latest in technology and safety. This includes its Co-pilot Concept and over-the-air update system. Mazda’s Co-pilot Concept is a monitoring system that will read the driver’s physical condition to determine whether autonomous driving is needed. In the case of an emergency, autonomous features will step in and safely steer or guide the car out of harm’s way.

Mazda’s over-the-air update system will allow drivers to download the latest software to make their Mazda experience seamless and convenient. Information about the vehicle’s diagnostics and technology will be made readily available for Mazda drivers so that they can be aware of everything involving their Mazda.

It is almost certain that Mazda will make use of its innovative KODO design concept when rolling out its new electric vehicles. The KODO design will help Mazda compete with other EV automakers as Mazda knows it will have to offer the best in technology, safety, and design. This line of thinking seems to have been used when creating the MX-30, but we will have to wait and see what else Mazda has in store as they prepare for their bold by-2030 EV rollout.
