I read in a recent interview with Mazda’s CEO, Masahiro Moro, that the company plans to launch its first electric-vehicle-only model in 2027. This is part of their efforts to speed up their electrification and catch up with their global rivals. While they did start selling an electric model of the MX-30 sport utility vehicle in 2021, it was initially launched as a hybrid car and not a dedicated electric vehicle. It will be exciting to see what Mazda comes up with for their first all-electric model in a few years.

I read that Moro mentioned that their company plans to increase the production of electric vehicles from 2028 and work with Toyota to develop top-notch electric control equipment. He also promised to enhance their efforts in electrifying China, which is the biggest auto market globally, and believes that the transition to EVs in the region will happen quickly.

It’s interesting to see that the automaker in the United States has started producing the gasoline-powered CX-50 SUV at its factory in Alabama and is looking to launch a hybrid model soon. I heard that the Inflation Reduction Act was signed into law last year, offering a tax break for those who purchase EVs assembled in North America.

It’s good to know that Mazda is considering production and battery procurement in the region to take advantage of this scheme. In addition, I think it’s a smart move for the CEO to consider setting up a new company to organize motorsport events and promote safe driving to enhance the brand value. It’s worth noting that the CEO, Moro, was promoted to the top position earlier this year, succeeding Akira Marumoto, who had been in charge for five years.
