Mazda has a New Two-Door Coupe in the Works

The Mazda 3 is brisk and faithful to everything Mazda stands for. Not only is the Mazda 3 available as a sedan, but a crossover as well. Filed in June of 2021, the patent obtained a priority date of July 2020, which means Mazda intends to accelerate the registration design. Mazda fans are breathing in history since this is the first time the Mazda 3 has ever attained a coupe form. 

Although the new Mazda coupe hasn’t emerged to life, the patent displays the Mazda 3’s Hatchback silhouette with details of a two-door body shell. Additionally, the patent concept details a plastic window for weight reduction. Many Mazda fans know that the plastic window seems better acquainted with sports cars, such as the Mazda MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF. However, speculation on the new structure leads many to consider the new design may come to life in a coupe sports car. 

The most inspiring coupes carry frameless windows. So it comes without shock that Mazda also submitted a second filing with the USPTO, demonstrating a frameless door design. The second patent details the inside mechanics, specifically the framework and hinge mechanism. 

Even though the patent illustrates a Mazda 3 Coupe, there’s plenty of room for speculation. For example, the Mazda may be a successor to the iconically discontinued RX-7. In addition, shortly following Mazda’s coupe patents, the automaker filed patent documents for a three-rotor, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe with a transaxle gearbox. These patents may join forces for a demand that the Japanese automaker has never seen. But for now, the speculation is enough to keep the excitement wheels turning.
