Mazda Files Patents for Potential New Coupe

Mazda has been causing a stir lately as it works to produce new innovative vehicles. Having released the Mazda Vision Coupe, a 2nd generation iteration of the RX-Vision, Mazda has been consistent in teasing its fans. With its latest new filing for a new trademark “R” logo, Mazda caused many to reminisce about the old Spirit R badge seen on the Mazda RX-7. This logo has many speculating about a potential new coupe in the works by Mazda. Although Mazda has said it will be focusing on producing 13 electric vehicles over the next decade, Mazda’s decisions with these latest filings have led many to believe the automaker is not quite done making luxury coupes just yet.
New Patent Filings
According to a blog post on the Japanese site Hatena, Mazda recently filed a host of performance-related patents (14 in total) in Japan for what looks to be an all-aluminum space frame. This has many speculating as to whether the concept schematics are for a new coupe. Looking at the illustration provided by the Japan Patent Office, it’s noticeable that the schematic resembles the Mazda RX-Vision concept that debuted in 2015. Given the greenhouse and rear quarter shape, the vehicle is very similar to the RX-Vision.
The use of an RX-Vision silhouette in the concept sketch shouldn’t be taken as the final product by Mazda. In producing a new concept vehicle, automakers want to keep fans interested and enthusiastic. Mazda is taking the smart route by providing drawings already available to the public. This draws more interest and builds anticipation as to what the automaker could be up to. What we do know of the concept schematic comes from the patent itself.
“The present invention is intended to provide a rear body structure of a vehicle that can ensure the support rigidity of the rear suspension and effectively transmit the rear thrust load from the rear side housing (rigid member) to the coupling body between the side sill and the pillar.” – Japan Patent Office
As seen with most of Mazda’s recent patent filings, a focus on rigidity seems to be emphasized. Rigidity will affect a vehicle’s suspension and allow more control and smoother handling. Mazda has done well to continue building anticipation over its next concept vehicle. A luxury sport coupe would be in line with Mazda’s vision although electric vehicles have been a focus as well, as seen with the all-new all-electric MX-30. That a high-performance coupe might also be in the works will leave Mazda fans excited to see what the automaker will bring to the table.
