Mazda EV’s Will Come to Life at Mexico Plant
I heard that Mazda is exploring the possibility of producing electric vehicles specifically for the North American market in Mexico by 2028. Apparently, the company is planning to introduce two EV models in North America, as per Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro’s recent comments. It’s interesting to see how the automotive industry is shifting towards EVs, and it will be exciting to see what Mazda has in store for the future.
I just learned that Mazda is planning to release two electric vehicle models in North America by 2028, and it’s exciting to see how the automotive industry is shifting towards EVs. One of the EVs will be based on an existing architecture that can also accommodate internal combustion and hybrid powertrains, while the other will be based on a dedicated EV platform. Apparently, the production of these models will begin in Japan with localized North American production to follow. It will be interesting to see what Mazda has in store for the future.
It’s interesting to see how the automotive industry is evolving towards electric vehicles. I just learned that shifting production to Mexico can qualify vehicles for federal EV tax credits in the U.S. BMW recently announced plans to make its next-generation “Neue Klasse” EVs in Mexico, and Tesla is also considering a Mexican plant. It seems that new rules include stipulations for local assembly and raw material sourcing, but they treat vehicles assembled in Mexico the same as those assembled in the U.S. This could be a strategic move for automakers wanting to take advantage of tax incentives and expand their EV production capabilities.
I find it interesting that Mazda already has an assembly plant in Salamanca, Mexico, which builds several of their models with internal combustion powertrains. However, it’s worth noting that not all of these models are sold in the U.S. Mazda’s only other North American factory is a joint venture plant with Toyota in Huntsville, Alabama, which currently builds the CX-50 crossover. With the new rules and tax incentives, it could be possible for Mazda to expand their production capabilities and potentially shift towards electric vehicles as well.
It seems that Mazda is making some big moves in the electric vehicle market. They announced plans for a dedicated EV platform back in 2021, with a goal of having it ready by 2025. Additionally, they have been exploring options for battery cells, with Panasonic being a potential supplier. It will be interesting to see how Mazda continues to expand their production capabilities and shift towards electric vehicles in the coming years.
Mazda seems to be very serious about their plans to electrify their vehicles. Under the guidance of their previous CEO, Marumoto, the company launched a business plan that involves spending $10.6 billion on electrification through 2030. They are aiming to achieve up to 40% of their global sales to come from EVs by that time. It will be interesting to see how Mazda progresses towards this ambitious goal in the coming years.
It seems that Mazda is taking a unique approach to the electrification of their vehicles, as they have stated that longer range EVs are not the future for them in the U.S. and beyond. Currently, their only EV offering, the MX-30, has an EPA range of just 100 miles and is quite rare. However, there are rumors of a rotary range-extended MX-30 R-EV in the works, although it remains unconfirmed for the American market. It will be interesting to see how Mazda’s strategy plays out in the years to come.
