Mazda Embarks on Rotary Revolution with Dedicated Development Team

In a significant move toward advancing rotary engine technology, Mazda has unveiled plans to establish a specialized team exclusively dedicated to the development of the iconic engine. The Japanese automaker, already having reintroduced the rotary engine in the hybrid version of the MX-30 small SUV, is now intensifying its commitment to this unique technology. This strategic decision comes on the heels of the recent unveiling of a rotary-powered sports car concept, demonstrating Mazda’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of innovation.

The announcement of this groundbreaking initiative was made by Mazda President and CEO, Katsuhiro Moro, during his address at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon. Moro, who had earlier discussed the Iconic SP concept, shared insights into the future trajectory of Mazda’s rotary engine endeavors. The compact sports car concept, first showcased at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, received widespread acclaim, prompting Moro to express gratitude for the enthusiastic support received.

Addressing the audience, Moro stated, “With your encouragement, we are launching a rotary engine development group on 1 February to move closer to this dream.” While stopping short of confirming immediate production plans, Moro’s announcement has ignited hope among rotary engine enthusiasts worldwide, signaling a potential resurgence of this distinctive technology.

However, the envisioned next generation of rotary sports cars, following in the footsteps of the legendary RX-7 and RX-8, might deviate from traditional expectations. The Iconic SP concept, a pivotal player in Mazda’s rotary resurgence, employs a rotary engine as a generator to power electric motors, akin to the Mazda MX-30 R-EV. This innovative approach contrasts with conventional drivelines, as the electric motors are the driving force behind the wheels.

The Iconic SP concept, boasting an impressive output of approximately 272kW and a weight of 1450kg, has drawn comparisons to the renowned Porsche 911. Mazda’s visionary concept represents a departure from conventional rotary sports cars, embracing a hybrid technology that blends the unique characteristics of the rotary engine with the efficiency of electric motors.
