Mazda Motor Corporation has made an announcement today that it has produced over two million units of rotary engine vehicles. The rotary engine is known for its unique structure that utilizes rotational movement of triangular rotors to generate power. The first rotary engine vehicle produced by Mazda was the Mazda Cosmo Sport (Mazda 110S) in 1967, and since then, the company has continued to refine and develop its rotary engines, improving the performance, fuel economy, and durability. Mazda has maintained its position as the only automaker that mass-produces rotary engines for many years. The company resumed production of rotary engine vehicles in June 2021, after ceasing production of the Mazda RX-8 in 2012. Mazda is now preparing to launch its twelfth rotary engine vehicle, the Mazda MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV, in the upcoming days.

Takeshi Mukai, Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer at Mazda, expressed his thoughts on reaching the milestone of producing two million rotary engine vehicles. He stated that “The rotary engine is a special part of Mazda history and represents our ‘never-stop challenging spirit.’ The rotary engine is much loved by customers around the world, and we are excited to resume production and see it make a comeback. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who has supported us on this journey – in particular, the many customers who have purchased rotary engine vehicles, our rotary engine fans, and all our business partners who were involved in development and production. Moving forward, we will continue to pass on this ‘never-stop challenging spirit,’ offering attractive vehicles that provide our customers with an exciting driving experience even in the age of electrification.”

Mazda’s core value of “Human Centric” has always been focused on delivering the “Joy of Driving” to its customers. The company plans to continue pursuing this vision and create moving experiences that add to the “Joy of Living” in customers’ daily lives. By leveraging its innovative technologies and passionate spirit, Mazda is committed to providing customers with exciting and enjoyable driving experiences that go beyond just getting from point A to point B.
