Mazda Alludes to an All-Electric Roadster
Mazda is set to debut an exciting electric sports car concept at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show. The Japanese automaker is suggesting that the production version of the car could be an electric iteration of the iconic MX-5 model. This is an exciting development for electric vehicle enthusiasts and Mazda fans alike.
According to a recent media statement, Mazda has revealed that it will be showcasing multiple generations of its MX-5 sports car at the Tokyo Motor Show. The stand will also feature a “new concept car designed to symbolise the exhibit theme,” as per the announcement. This is a great opportunity for fans of the MX-5 and Mazda enthusiasts to witness the latest technological advancements and design innovations from the automaker.
Mazda has released a dimly-lit teaser image of the electric sports car concept it will unveil at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month. The image features the rear end of the car, highlighting its LED tail-lights and red backlit Mazda badge, which are similar to those found on the automaker’s “Vision Study Model” that was revealed last year. This teaser image has generated a lot of buzz and excitement among Mazda fans and electric vehicle enthusiasts alike, who are eagerly waiting to see the car in all its glory.
Reputable Japanese publications have recently reported that the fifth-generation Mazda MX-5, also known as the ‘NE’ or ‘NG’, is expected to launch between 2026 and 2028. While earlier reports had suggested that the new MX-5 could be offered with hybrid-petrol power, Japanese magazine Best Car is now claiming that Mazda could opt for a fully-electric, battery-propulsion system instead. This is a bold move by the automaker, indicating its commitment to the electrification of its vehicles and its willingness to embrace new technologies to meet the evolving demands of the market.
“There are various candidates for the power unit that the next Roadster will be equipped with. BEV (battery electric vehicle), HEV (hybrid), PHEV (plug-in hybrid) all possibilities. However as long as the manufacturer has set a goal of ‘everything will be electrified by 2030’ pure-engine [petrol-only] vehicles will be difficult.” -Best Car Report
It was announced last week that the current-generation Mazda MX-5, which made its debut in 2015, will receive a facelift. This is believed to be a stop-gap measure to extend the current model’s showroom run before the anticipated launch of the NE/NG MX-5. The new electric sports car concept that Mazda plans to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month is expected to give us a glimpse into the future of the iconic MX-5 model. The media will have access to the Tokyo Motor Show starting from October 25, 2023.
