Mazda is waving goodbye to electric vehicles in the United States by discontinuing the MX-30, but the automaker hasn’t given up on dominating the electric market. The Japanese automaker has exciting plans to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS), signaling a commitment to the electric future.

Although Mazda is keeping the details under wraps for now, they’ve confirmed that electric vehicles hitting North American roads from 2025 onward will feature the Tesla-designed charging port. This move aims to provide customers with a “broader range of charging options” and enhanced convenience, offering access to over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America.

While Mazda is tight-lipped about their upcoming EVs, previous hints suggest the electric SUVs will cross assembly lines in Japan and stretch across the Pacific to the United States. However, manufacturing the Mazda hybrids and electrics could impact their eligibility for incentives, but as long as the leasing loophole remains open, it shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. Rumors from Japan hint at Mazda’s electric vehicles sharing platforms with their internal combustion engine counterparts. The focus is on electric crossovers, aligning with their broad appeal.

Turning the spotlight back to NACS, Mazda was one of the last holdouts, flying under the radar without an electric vehicle in their lineup. The Japanese automaker will join the ranks of industry giants like BMW, Ford, General Motors, and the Volkswagen Group. Stellantis might be feeling a bit lonely, but considering the seismic shift in the automotive landscape over the past year, it wouldn’t be surprising if they, too, embrace the standard shortly.
