The Mazda Miata has always been known for its fun driving experience and affordability. With Mazda’s announcement that the 2026 MX-5 Miata will receive an electrified makeover, fans can expect the sports car to remain relevant well into the future. It’s unclear what type of electrification the Miata will receive, but it’s likely that Mazda will introduce a hybrid or plug-in hybrid model before developing an all-electric variant. The Vision Study Model that Mazda showcased last year could provide some inspiration for the electric Miata, but it’s more likely that the production car will simply incorporate some of its styling cues. Overall, we’re excited to see what the future holds for the next-gen Miata!

It’s been reported that Mazda has signed an agreement with Rohm Co. to develop electric powertrains, and with Envision AESC to develop batteries. While it’s unclear how these contracts will impact the next-generation Miata, it’s been suggested that a hybrid version of the roadster would make more sense. The Miata’s small size could potentially pose challenges when it comes to packaging a battery with sufficient range, and a pure EV version could also mean a significant hike in price. Some have suggested that Mazda could partner with another automaker to develop the platform and share costs, similar to the approach taken by BMW and Toyota with the Z4 and Supra. Regardless of the path Mazda chooses, it’s clear that the future of the Miata will be electrified in some way.

I think it’s understandable that Mazda would want to keep the Miata at a reasonable price point, even with the advances they’re making in powertrain and other areas. Based on this, I believe that a price of around $33,000 would make sense for the next-generation Miata.

I’m excited to hear that the next MX-5 will be available for the 2026 model year and in time for the summer of 2025 top-down driving season. It’s always great to see new advancements in powertrain and other areas, while still keeping the price point reasonable. Based on the previous model, I think a price around $33,000 would be a good fit for the next-generation Miata.
